Agora/Market Manual - 51st Thessaloniki IFF-2010Crossroads ProjectsQuiet PeopleCroatia / FranceProduced by:MAXIMA FILM/KINOELEKTRONDirector: Ognjen SvilicicScriptwriter: Ognjen SvilicicProducers:Damir Teresak - Croatia, Janja Kralj - FranceBudget: 1.345.499 euroSecured Financing: 44%Location: CroatiaLooking for:Co-producer, Sales Agent, Distributor,Funds, Post-production FacilitiesSYNOPSISThe Bohnjec are an average Croatian family living in modest seclusion. The TV-zonked father and mother aremore proud of each other than they love each other. In spite of their poverty, they think they are respectedcitizens and are keen to preserve their status as educated people. They respect the government, particularly thefather. Their understanding of the world and their own position in it is shaken when their teen-age son Tomicacomes home beaten up. After an examination, the doctor sends him home, but it seems that Tomica has quiteserious head injuries, which the doctors did not diagnose. Tomica refuses to say what happened. He is ashamedto admit it. This secret creates an atmosphere of distrust between him and his parents. The parents find theirworld of false security collapsing and have to re-examine their lives and question everything they believed in.DIRECTORS’ STATEMENTThis is a story of a family in crisis, going through the horrors of Croatian institutions. Any concern of society forthe individual is an illusion. In fact, the whole of the society is based on corruption, violence and survival of thefittest. The family in my film relies on institutions, because they don’t trust each other. This is because they donot communicate. They have grown apart. This feeling is rooted in the fact that they have been living incommunism where people where believing that institutions are always right. We could say that this is a storyabout a family that could not keep afloat during the transition, about a society that has never renouncedrepression and violence. Both society and family have to take a step forward, or else they are going to explode. In order to live through this difficult period, the family has to stick together; they have to believe in themselves. This is the idea that I would like the audience to take away when they leave the theatre.MAXIMA FILMMaxima film was founded in 1992 as a company for producing mostly feature films, TV programs, documentariesand for production service to foreign film companies for shooting in Croatia.KINOELEKTRONPRODUCER’S CONTACT INFORMATIONMAXIMA FILM - CroatiaT. +385 13647700damir.teresak@zg.t-com.hrwww.maxima-film.hrKinoElektron is a production company based in Paris, founded by Janja Kralj.
