Agora/Market Manual - 51st Thessaloniki IFF-2010Balkan Fund ProjectsWalk On!TurkeyProduced by: IN WORKS ISTANBULDirector: Ismail NecmiScriptwriter: Ismail NecmiCo-Producers: Ismail Necmi &Dieter SauterBudget: 300.000 euroSecured Financing: 39%SYNOPSISIn Diyarbakir, Kurdish boy Rüstem, is discovering his sexuality. At the same time, 17-year-old Turk Mehmet, suffers the same pains in Istanbul. A world apart, both boys encounter the same problem; how to find love in aworld filled with hate. Rüstem chooses one path – he runs away from his family to Istanbul. What he finds, however, is no money and no work. He becomes a transvestite hustler and builds a new life in Tarlabaşı, the redlightsuburb of Istanbul.Mehmet chooses another path – he hides his sexuality. Securing a well-paying job, he settles into a tensedouble life. Ten years later, Rüstem and Mehmet’s paths cross in a dark corner of Tarlabaşı. It is not love at firstsight. But while Mehmet, the wealthy “White Turk”, and Rüstem the “dark”, feminine immigrant, are preoccupiedwith their own prejudice, they’re blinded to the real dangers awaiting them in the shadows.DIRECTORS’ STATEMENTWalk On! draws together techniques from documentary and feature film to tell the real story of Tarlabaşi, partof the municipality where I have lived for the last twenty years. At once the tale of Rüstem and Mehmet, thisfilm – which will be shot on location in this area – is also the story a place where poor Kurdish families, illegalAfrican immigrants, transvestites, and Gypsies all struggle to build some kind of community on the margins ofTurkish society despite deep differences in their values; a place where during the last 2 years over 40 peoplehave been killed because of their ethnicity and sexuality. The cast will include both professional actors but alsoactual residents of Tarlabaşi, telling their own stories. Mehmet will be played by a professional actor, but Rüstemwill be played by a Kurdish transvestite who lives and works as a ‘performer’ in the neighborhood.IN WORKS ISTANBULIN Works Istanbul is a independent art-house production company created by the directors and photographersIsmail Necmi (www.ismailnecmi.com) and Dieter Sauter (www.dieter-sauter.com) in Istanbul, in order todevelop director-driven films and documentaries.
