Agora/Market Manual - 51st Thessaloniki IFF-2010Balkan Fund ProjectsThe HouseCroatiaProduced by: MAINFRAME PRODUCTIONDirector: Zoran SudarScriptwriter: Sanja KovacevicProducer: Igor A. NolaBudget: 1.298.650 euroSecured Financing: 14%SYNOPSISDjuro is a Bosnian refugee living with his wife and daughter in a deserted house in a Croatian village. Havinglost a son in the war he and Bisera are trying, unsuccessfully thus far, to have another child. Djuro’s hell beginswhen the Serbian owner of the house, Miki comes back with his son to reclaim his property.Miki is an honest man who has every right to the house, but Djuro has to fight for his family. He trieseverything to drive Miki away, but Miki persists. Nediljko, the mayor of the village, also wants Miki’s land for hisbusiness and gives Djuro a mine to kill Miki. Djuro cannot bring himself to do it and, feeling like a completefailure, tries to kill himself. Desperate, Bisera wants to give Djuro a reason to live – another child. She asks Mikito impregnate her. It will take more than friendship with the enemy for humanity to win.DIRECTORS’ STATEMENTInspired by true events this story describes the chain of events that mercilessly whips good men and forcesthem to turn against one another fighting more viciously than when in war. The two men are claiming the samehouse, the same tiny speck of dust in the whole universe, with nowhere else to go, because there is nowhere togo. In this film we are not trying to construct or imagine. We are trying to establish strong, lifelike charactersand sincerely observe what happens to them. Like in a documentary, we are recording human emotions andthe actions they produce. They will have to dig deep to remain human and yet to change. This is an inner fightseen through action. Each of the characters lives in its own little space defined by emotions and when theirspaces clash the colors of emotions paint the screen.MAINFRAME PRODUCTIONMainframe Production is a production company specializing in European co-productions.
