Unlike manyothers of its generation (Sandy Wilsonwrote it in 1953) it doesn’t date, possibly because it was written as asend up in the first place, anaffectionate pastiche of The RoaringTwenties, but more probably becauseof the lively jazz–based music that hasbeen so successful in later musicalslike Chicago.Consequently, for me the best thingin the show was the Twenties music, provided by a lively seven pieceorchestra directed by AndrewStandeven, and ranging from theromantic (’Fancy Forgetting’) to theCharleston, the Riviera and the tangoand complemented by the spirited tapand dance routines beautifullychoreographed by Betty Hall.STAR RATING: 7 out of 10.
