The <strong>Champion</strong> • Wednesday 19 June 2013Shape up in the kitchen– or risk food poisoningReport by Danielle ThompsonCMBAVisit us @ www.ChampNews.com • 21Liverpool ‘afterthe apocalypse’HOME cooks in Sefton are being warned toshape up in the kitchen – after 82% of peoplesurveyed in the North West confessed to one ormore bad habits that put them at risk of foodpoisoning.The Food Standards Agency survey revealedthat nearly one in four people admitted theystill eat food that had been dropped on thefloor – and more than one in five confessedthey don’t wash their hands properly beforepreparing food.Shockingly, over a third don’t check ‘use by’dates, with 87% of people wrongly using the‘sniff test’ and 62% just checking the colour –although this will not always reveal whetherfood is safe to eat.Unlike ‘best before’ dates, ‘use by’ dates arebased on scientific food safety testing, but 39%of those questioned said they would eat foodafter the use–by date.There are more than a million cases of foodpoisoning each year, resulting in 20,000hospitalisations and 500 deaths.Despite these nasty habits, 94% believethey’ve never given family or friends foodpoisoning – and if they do fall ill themselves,only 6% of people in the North West considerwhether the cleanliness of their own kitchen isthe cause.Better news is that 97% of respondents, washBad food habits can let bacteria like E. colitake hold.chopping boards in between preparing rawand ready–to–eat food and almost 78% stickto the recommended 48 hours for keepingleftovers in the fridge.Dave Tilleray, assistant director ofcommunity services said: “Food poisoningcases are often caused by food prepared oreaten at home.“By taking more care in the kitchen, peoplecan avoid becoming ill through foodpoisoning.”For more information visitwww.food.gov.uk/kitchen–check orwww.westlancs.gov.uk/foodsafety.A digitally altered shot of the Liver buildings by PlayStation.THIS eerie image shows how Liverpool’sfamous waterfront could look in theaftermath of an apocalypse.PlayStation programmers have digitallyaltered images of British landmarks toillustrate what they would look like in thedying days of civilization.
