Diploma <strong>in</strong> Social Services (SOSS)ABOUT THE PROGRAMMEEnhance your abilities to provide social support services withthe Diploma <strong>in</strong> Social Services. This programme is designed toprovide an academic foundation and specialised tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g forpersons <strong>in</strong> social work or community work fields who need toupgrade their academic qualifications for further tertiary levelstudies and formalize functional skills for the effectivedevelopment and practice of the social work role. Studentsbuild competencies <strong>in</strong> English Language and Mathematics andare <strong>in</strong>troduced to the theory and practice of social work.WHO IS THIS PROGRAMME FOR?This Diploma programme is designed for persons wish<strong>in</strong>g todevelop social service skills <strong>in</strong> order to facilitate supportservices and social engagement <strong>in</strong> their local communities andpersons <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> formaliz<strong>in</strong>g their qualifications <strong>in</strong> socialservice.PROGRAMME STRUCTURE & CONTENTThe diploma programme is delivered us<strong>in</strong>g a mixed-modeformat. Some courses are delivered <strong>in</strong> a face-to-faceenvironment and some courses are delivered us<strong>in</strong>g blendedlearn<strong>in</strong>g or onl<strong>in</strong>e approaches. Students must have access to acomputer and Internet access. Onl<strong>in</strong>e orientation is conductedbefore the start of the programme.Students complete a total of 30 credits normally equivalent to10 courses. Students explore general <strong>edu</strong>cation and corecourses <strong>in</strong> a number of areas <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g:• Fundamentals of English• Pr<strong>in</strong>ciples & Practice of Social Work• Human Growth & Development• Human Behaviour & the Social Environment• Adm<strong>in</strong>istrative Pr<strong>in</strong>ciples & PracticesWHEN WILL IT START?Students may start this programme <strong>in</strong> August or January of theacademic yearENTRY REQUIREMENTSApplicants should meet one of the follow<strong>in</strong>g requirementswhich <strong>in</strong>clude:1. Persons over the age of 21 on the basis of their overallacademic and professional atta<strong>in</strong>ments.2. Holders of the approved certificates from the School ofCont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g Studies, UWI with an acceptable pass <strong>in</strong>English Language3. Holders of three (3) CXC-CSEC or GCE ‘O’ Level passes orequivalent, not necessarily obta<strong>in</strong>ed at the same sitt<strong>in</strong>g,as follows:(i) English (A), and(ii) Two (2) other approved subjects.In addition applicants should have a m<strong>in</strong>imum of one year <strong>in</strong> thesocial service sector as staff or volunteer.HOW TO APPLYThe <strong>Open</strong> <strong>Campus</strong> accepts onl<strong>in</strong>e applications only for regionalprogrammes. Log on to our website www.open.uwi.<strong>edu</strong> and followthe on-screen <strong>in</strong>structions to complete the application form.WHAT DOCUMENTS SHOULD I SUBMIT?Submit your application receipt together with the support<strong>in</strong>gdocuments below to your Centre Head/Site Coord<strong>in</strong>ator with<strong>in</strong> aweek of your application. The Centre Head/Site Coord<strong>in</strong>ator willcertify the photocopies of your documents and return theorig<strong>in</strong>als to you.Support<strong>in</strong>g Documentsa) Birth certificateb) Academic certificates/grade slipsc) Professional certificates/diplomas (where applicable)d) Marriage certificate/deed poll (whichever is applicable) ifthe present name is different from that on documents.Each name must be spelt correctly and also correctlyhyphenated, where necessary.HOW MUCH WILL THIS PROGRAMME COST?Currently, a three-credit face-to-face or onl<strong>in</strong>e/blended coursefor any of the undergraduate degree, associate degree, diplomaor certificate programmes will cost you US$240.00 or itsequivalent <strong>in</strong> your local currency. This covers the cost of tuitionand exam<strong>in</strong>ations costs. For onl<strong>in</strong>e/blended courses, fees mayalso cover materials, teleconferences and tutorials asappropriate.The University reviews tuition fees annually and coursefees may be subject to change.
