The National Disability Survey in Afghanistan was carried out in 2005.It is the fi rst such study that covered the entire territory. Based on theInternational Classifi cation of Functioning, Disability and Health of theWorld Health Organization, and the Capabilities Approach of AmartyaSen, the NDSA aims to provide insights into the living conditions,needs and hopes of Afghans with disability and their families. A briefoverview of the results is presented here in the Executive SummaryReport. This document is a fi rst glimpse into the lives of this vulnerablegroup and provides a comprehensive understanding that is vital inorder to defi ne policies and programmes.European UnionUnited Nations
