40 Book Reading ChallengePoetry anthologies ~ 5 booksFables, Folktales, Legends & Myths ~ 2 books<strong>Class</strong>ics ~ 2 booksRealistic Fiction ~ 5 booksHis<strong>to</strong>rical Fiction ~ 5 booksScience Fiction ~ 2 booksFantasy ~ 4 booksMystery ~ 2 booksInformational ~ 4 booksBiography, Au<strong>to</strong>biography & Memoir ~ 2 booksChapter-book choice ~ 9 booksNote: Books more than 350 pages will count as 2 books<strong>to</strong>wards your goal of 40 books.


Reader Response Journal• Students will NOT be graded on how manybooks they read this year.• Students will earn a grade for writing in theirReader Response Journals.• Those journal entries are based on the booksthey are reading for the 40 Book Challenge.• Journal entries are graded on a 1-5 rubricand then the score is multiplied by 3.


Mondays:Homework• Receive new vocabulary homework packet. Students are <strong>to</strong>make 10 flash cards. There are 20 words <strong>to</strong>tal.Tuesdays:• Complete grammar pages. We will correct assignment inclass the following day.Wednesdays:• Complete vocabulary practice quiz. If your child isstruggling with the quiz, please have them complete thevocabulary sort and read around on my website.Thursdays:• Reader Response journal entry.Fridays:• Vocabulary Quiz! Turn in packet!


Process PapersWe will write one process paper per trimester:narrative, response <strong>to</strong> literature & persuasiveessayThe writing and editing of the essay will becompleted in class.Students will be required <strong>to</strong> type the essay forhomework.Please review the “WPUSD Style Book” locatedunder “Student Resources” on my webpage forformatting details…all papers must be submittedin MLA format.


Grammar• Students will complete a Daily Gram lessoneveryday Monday-Thursday.• Daily Grams are corrected in class daily andcollected on Thursdays for credit.• On Tuesday’s I do a more in-depth grammarlesson and students record notes in theirgrammar notebook.• We will NOT be using the Holt Grammar Book.If your child has this book at home they mayreturn it <strong>to</strong> the library.


Late or Missing Assignments– Work will only be accepted 1 day late!• <strong>Grade</strong>s are reduced for late work by 25%– Missing work will generate an Email sent <strong>to</strong> parent(s)• A response is not required– No Name papers will receive a 25% grade reduction (if I canfigure out who it belongs <strong>to</strong>)– Students are responsible for turning in their assignments.– <strong>Grade</strong>s are based on an accumulation of points over thetrimester…usually around 1,000…not receiving credit for a20 point assignment will not ruin a grade.
