GeoPulseBoomer/SparkerProfiling SystemIntroductionThe GeoPulse boomer system is widely accepted bythe marine geophysical community as the bestoption for high resolution, deep penetrationprofiling in both deep ocean and shallow coastalenvironments. Industry proven, with thousands ofkilometres surveyed, GeoPulse offers a flexiblehigh resolution solution. The system provides up tothree times the acoustic energy of conventionalprofiling systems while operating in very shallowwater and in high noise environments. The surfacetowed acoustic source is easy to deploy and the onboardunits are compact and easily installed. Forsurveys where even greater penetration is required, the GeoPulse Multi-Electrode Sparker Array maybe used in place of the Boomer plate, but at theexpense of some trade-off in resolution.Basic System• GeoPulse 5420S Solid State Power SupplyThe GeoPulse 5420S employs a solid state high voltageswitching device which offers significant advances overthe older technology, including higher efficiency, veryhigh reliability and excellent repeatability. TheGeoPulse 5420S is controlled entirely from the frontpanel, making it very easy to operate, and incorporatesthe high level of safety features you would expect froma GeoAcoustics product.• A specially designed Power Cable is used to connect5420S to the source.• An acoustic source which can be either a Boomer plate(Model 5813B) mounted on a Catamaran (Model5812A) or a Multi-Electrode Sparker Array. The GeoPulse sound source produces a high energypulse by the action of a unique vacuum controlledelectromechanical “plate”. The vacuum controls thedegree of damping and ensures a repeatable, highenergy signature. The characteristic output of thesound source gives much improved resolution overconventional systems and up to ten times the seabedpenetration of standard “pinger” profiler systems.• GeoPulse Receiver (Model 5210A), usually with aSwell Filter Option fitted. The Receiver unit receives the acoustic return from thehydrophone. It combines in one compact and easilyoperated unit, the essential processing and controlfunctions for analogue data enhancement and simpleinterface to any industry standard graphic recorder.• GeoPulse Hydrophone (Model 5110A)The GeoPulse hydrophone array receives the returnedsignals. The hydrophone contains twenty elements andis designed for maximum durability in offshoreconditions.Data from the GeoPulse Receiver can be displayed directlyonto a wide variety of industry standard graphic recorders.Alternatively the GeoPulse Receiver may be omitted, and theoutput from the GeoPulse Hydrophone may be fed directlyinto a GeoPro Sonar Processor for recording and processing.Features• Deep penetration in wide variety of sub-bottomstructures.• Easy to operate and install.• Good shallow water performance.• Deployed by one-two people.• Proven offshore track record.• Higher source levels enable operation in water depthsto 500m.• Rugged and reliable.• Good performance in high noise environments.• Cost effective solution.POWER (J)Expected Penetration from GeoPulse525455350300280175105GravelSand(salt/sand)Mud(fine mud)Sparker Plate00 25 50 75 100 125 150 175 200 225DEPTH OF PENETRATION (METRES)
