E L Tideas<strong>ELT</strong> <strong>Ideas</strong> <strong>08</strong> <strong>Programme</strong>Gwyneth FoxGwyneth Fox started her career as an EFL teacher in Rome. She returned to UK, where she lectured in Applied Linguistics atBirmingham Polytechnic, and ran teacher-training courses. She then returned to the classroom, and taught at all levels, whilstcontinuing to train teachers. She was recruited to the Cobuild project at the University of Birmingham as a part-time researcher when itbegan in 1981. She continued to work with the project, taking over as Publishing Director in 1993, being responsible for all thedictionaries, grammars, and other materials. During that time and since then she has run courses, given seminars, and attendedconferences in Brazil, Spain, Poland, Mexico, UK and many other countries. Gwyneth left Cobuild in 1997, and lectured in linguistics atthe University of Birmingham. She is now a Visiting Fellow at the University of Aston. Until the end of 2007 she was also Dictionaries’Publisher for <strong>Macmillan</strong>, and is now Consultant to the Dictionaries Publishing Team.Target audience: ALLA Dictionary at your FingertipsIn this workshop I shall explain why learners’ dictionaries have the information in them that they do, and where the information comesfrom. I shall focus particularly on topics such as word frequency, collocation, and pragmatics rather than on grammar and wordmeaning! I shall also include various activities to show the importance of such information to both teachers and learners.Target audience: ALLGetting the most out of your Learners’ DictionaryDictionaries, particularly monolingual learners’ dictionaries, are full of information. Unfortunately, many students – and even someteachers – do not realise what a valuable language resource they are and so do not use them as well as they might. In this workshopI will explain what information they include and why it is so useful to learners. I will also suggest various activities that teachers can dowith their students to help them to get the most out of their dictionaries, and more particularly how they can use the dictionaries tohelp build up their confidence in using English.Judy Garton-SprengerJudy Garton-Sprenger has a wide range of experience in English language teaching through working as a teacher/teacher trainer, as awriter and as an actor. With a degree in European Studies and a diploma in TEFLA, she joined International House in London, whereteaching led to teacher training and to her first <strong>ELT</strong> writing project. Judy has spoken at conferences and led seminars for teachers inLatin America, Western, Central and Eastern Europe, including work for the British Council, the Soros Foundation and universitiesthroughout Britain. Meanwhile she has written numerous coursebooks for adult, secondary and primary students. She has also been aCambridge ESOL examiner, item-writer and syllabus consultant, and written radio scripts for BBC English. Weshall also share ideas for working with large mixed ability classes and for helping students to develop simple strategies for learnerindependence with activities from <strong>Macmillan</strong>'s new course Inspiration, by Judy Garton-Sprenger and Philip Prowse.Target audience: ZŠ2, SŠLearning in Style!Left brain, right brain or no brain? Is learning style identification a fad or a useful tool? In this practical workshop we'll do a learningstyles questionnaire and see whether you agree with its 'diagnosis'.
