are running ahead or behind their handicaps. Thus if a car in<br />

Class F has taken three hours for fifteen laps, the time allowed<br />

by the handicap being 2 hours 47 mins . '12 secs ., that car is obviously<br />

nearly a minute per lap slower than its estimated speed . Again, if a<br />

car say in Class D has taken 3 hours 50 mins . for twenty laps, the time<br />

allowed by the handicap being 3 hours 56 mins ., that car is beating the<br />

handicap, and gradually gaining on the cars ahead of it . By thus<br />

checking the times on the score board it will be possible to decide which<br />

cars are making the best running, and which are likely, therefore, to<br />

stand the best chance of winning the race.<br />

a race as the Tourist Trophy <strong>Race</strong> is an urgent one, as unless it is possible<br />

to see almost at a glance the exact position of every competitor at any<br />

moment, then the race becomes chaos as soon as attention is relaxed<br />

for an instant . The problem is somewhat complicated for this race by<br />
