Licensing requirements are set interms of the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services (FAIS) Act, 37 of2000, and include criteria for personal character (integrity and honesty),education and training, competence and operational ability.2.4.5 Professional bodiesIndependent insurance brokers who adhere to a code of ethics and practiceas financial advisors in the areas of long-term insurance, short-term insurance,collective investment schemes, medical or health benefits oremployee/pension fund benefits may apply for membership of the InsuranceBrokers Council of South Africa, a professional body that promotes theinterests of its members and their training.2.4.6 EmploymentAlthough insurance companies employ large numbers of brokers, manybrokers are self-employed or work in the broader financial services sector inbanks and firms that provide financial advisory services to individuals andcompanies.
