Osunwoke et al . . .…………………………...……J. Appl. Biosci. 2010. Study of the Sexual dimorphism of human sternumand 48.42mm for females. The combined length ofmanubrium and mesosternum was 147.08mm formales and 127.02mm for females.A study conducted on the human sternumas an index of age and sex revealed that the meanlength of manubrium was 53mm and 48mm formales and females, respectively, and thecombined mean length of manubrium andmesosternum was 149mm and 124mm for malesand females, respectively (Gautam et al. 2003). Inanother study done on sexual dimorphism of thehuman sternum in the Maharastian population ofIndia, 115 adult fully ossified dried sternacomprising of 75 males and 40 females were used. The parameters measured were length ofmanubrium, length of body and combined length ofmanubrium and mesosternum. Application of the50 th rule confirmed sex in 77.3% male and 77.5%female bones, while application of the 81 st rule forthe mesosternum confirmed sex in 73.3% malesand 75% females (Hannargi et al., 2007).MATERIALS AND METHODSA total number of 94 sterna comprising of 68 males and26 females were used for this study. The sterna wereobtained from University of Port Harcourt, University ofBenin, Niger Delta University, Imo State University andUniversity of Calabar all in south –south and south-RESULTSResults (Table 1) show the length of manubrium inmales and females, table 2 shows the length ofmesosternum in males and females, while table 3A study was done on 55 males and 65females where complex morphometric analysis ofbreadth, length and thickness of the sterna wasperformed on the sterna segments which wheredefined by coastal notches. Morphometric analysisshowed that the females and males were equal. The standardization according to shape waspresent in one standard sternal shape present inmore than 2/3 rd of the analyzed samples of bothsexes (Selthiefer et al., 2006).In a study carried out on morphometricstudies of x-rays of the sternum, sex determinationof a sufficient certainty was possible usingmeasurement of length and breadth obtained fromx-rays of the human sternum if a wide range ofdispersion is given. The given relations andformula are valid only when measuring thesternum of adults (Terge, 1983).This study aimed at using the sternum todistinguish factors for medico-legal studies whereexamination of human skeleton is obviously ofutmost importance for identification purposes.east Nigeria. Measurements were done along thelength of the manubrium, mesosternum and combinedlength of the manubrium and mesosternum using ameter rule. The data obtained was statistically analyzedusing z-test and windows SPSS.shows the combined length of the sternum in malesand females.Table 1: Length of males and females manubrium in southern Nigerian population.Interval of manubriumFrequency(mm)MaleFemale30-39 240-49 9 1950-59 26 460-69 18 170-79 1280-89 9Total 68 261637
