3. Discrimination in sportbased on genderGood PracticeA significant milestone for gender equality in sport was achieved in 1978,when UNESCO recognised sport and physical activity as a human right. However, despite the progress made since then, a large amount of workremains to be done in order to narrow the gender gap. 29 Gender discriminationcontinues to be a controversial topic in sport. In this chapter, we willexamine several types of barriers faced by girls throughout Europe, whileproviding examples of good practices to illustrate the progress made.■ DFB Mobile, GermanyThe German Football Associationuses 30 mobile stations to visitfootball clubs nationwide. Theobjective of these visits is to givepredominantly unqualified youthcoaches practical tips on promotingwomen’s football and dealingwith children from migrant backgrounds.Since the initiative beganin May 2009, more than 10,000events have been held, benefiting500,000 people.www.training-wissen.dfb.deBoys play football;girls practise gymnasticsWhen you talk about discrimination, mostpeople think of racism. The lack of genderequality is often seen not as a form of discrimination, but as a historical truth that willtake time to heal. All over Europe, our survey shows a significantgender gap when it comes to physicalactivity. 83% of boys – but only 70% of girls –say that they play sport outside of school. This gender gap increases when looking atmembership of clubs, with only 48% of girls(compared with 67% of boys) reporting thatthey participate in organised sport (Chart 3.01).According to our survey, some sports areclearly more popular with one sex than theother. Volleyball is more attractive for girls(17% versus 6%), as is gymnastics (17%versus 3%).
