HUAUTLA AREA: Small Caves (numbers refer to Area Sketch Map)621.2.3.4.5.6.7.Pit near small sink along trail to plateau. Five secondsfree-fall plus five more bouncing. Unexplored.Cave along the west side of the San Miguel dolina, justbelow the trail near the pass to the RIo Iglesia dolina.The cave was explored only to the end of the tWilight zoneand consists of a steeply sloping passage, that appears toturn to the left about 80 feet inside the cave.Cave along the trail on the west side of the San Migueldolina. The cave is directly in the pass to the Rio Iglesiadolina. It is a sink with a steep slope going down about40 feet to an unentered pit.Cave in side of hill about 1/2 kilometer southeast of SanAgustin on the short cut trail to San Miguel. This cave isjust across ridge from Cueva de San Agustin and might con'nect with it. A steep slope leads downward from the entrancefor about 70 feet to a 40 foot drop. The cave continues pastthe drop as a high fissure.Pit under the trail between San Miguel and Rio Santiago, andeast of the pass near the end of the roado The entrance issmall and covered with roaks, but the pit enlarges to about50 feet in diameter. Rocks bounce for six secondsoUnexplored.Pit about 60 feet deep located on the northwest side of thetrail to Rio Santiago. Two horizontal entrances about threefeet high and four feet wide lead from the trail to the pit.WATER TROUGH CAVE - This cave is located near a trail leadingto the ridge above the road near the southeast end of the SanAgustin dolina. The entrance lies at the bottom of a shallowsink, and is formed along bedding planes. Inside the entranceis a hollowed-out log for collecting water from dripping formations.The cave contains much fill material which has createda couple of short drops before completely filling thepassage. Note the straight ceiling. See sketch map, page 66.8. Small cave in sink just northwest of Water Trough Cave oCave is about 20 feet long, and 10 feet high and wide. Itslopes steeply downward to a dirt choke.9. Small cave in road cut above entrance to s6tano de SanAgustin. A short breakdown slope leads to a small room atthe bottom.10. Sink just across the road from cave 9. A dirt pit dropsabout 20 feet, and can be climbed. At the bottom is a smallhorizontal hole filled with water.
