The <strong>Association</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Mexican</strong><strong>Cave</strong> <strong>Studies</strong> is a nonprofit organization whose goals are thecollection and dissemination of in<strong>for</strong>mation concerning <strong>Mexican</strong>caves. Membership is open to all interested persons at a rate of$5.00 US currency <strong>for</strong> the calendar year, with memberships startingat the first of each year. Persons Joining after the first of theyear will receive all publications <strong>for</strong> that year. Publications<strong>for</strong> the year of 1965 are still available <strong>for</strong> $6.00 US by writingto the AMCS.Members are urged to submit articles <strong>for</strong> publication. Don EricksonNEWS NOTES• During the past Christmas vacation (December, 1967) the WesternHemisphere depth record was surpassed twice in the Huautla, Oaxacaarea. A group composed of Bill Biggers, T. R. Evans, Cliff Foreman,and John Fish was able to penetrate Sotano de San Agustin to a depthof about 1625 feet. Very high water and a need <strong>for</strong> more specializedeqUipment prevented further exploration. Two days later, after severaldays of exploring and mapping in the upper levels, Titch Morris,Pete Thompson, Keith Kennedy, Ian Drummond, Alan Ball, and Mike Boonfrom McMaster University, Ontario, Canada, entered Sotano del RioIglesia (1/4 mile from Sotano de San Agustin) <strong>for</strong> a projected 4 1/2day push. They surveyed about 7000 feet of passage and reached anew record depth of 1755 feet, which is apparently the end of thecave.• This number of the Newsletter completes Volume II. Persons planningto have their volume bound can do so at this time. Included withthis issue are brown, heavy-paper covers <strong>for</strong> the first three numberswhich may be used as dividers in binding.• The next issue of the Newsletter will initiate the 1967 year of AMCSpublications. Previous members are urged to rejoin now and also toactively recruit persons with a sincere interest in <strong>Mexican</strong> speleology.As the membership grows, the quality of AMCS publicationsas well as the amount of photographic coverage and mUlticolor reproductionscan be increased.
