The upperlevel consists of a series of large rooms and pa&sages with some formations, totaling about 1500feet. The gravel road passesthrough the small towns of Mochitlan and Quechultenangoon the way to Colotlipa, 25 miles from PetaquilIas.In Colotlipa, Andres Ortega is the governmentofficial in chage of the cave and will serve as agUide. The cave is an hourts walk (at a fast pace)northeast of Colotlipa.The name Juxtlahuaca, which means "beautiful,blue-green valley", is derived from a local hamlet.The main entrance is a few hundred feetabove the valley floor and is about 15 feet wideand 15 feet high. Bats inhabit the first 1000feet of the cave which consists mostly of walkingpassage, averaging 20 feet in diameter, and a fewsmall places created by formation blocks. Alsothere is an upper level room where the bats stay.Beyond the bat cave section, the character of thecave changes to the most beautiful and wel1-deco~ated cave known in Mexico. There are numerouslarge rooms containing flowstone draperies andmounds, with running water and many types of speleothems.The cave also contains numerous humanskeletal remains and pictographs (about 4000 feetfrom the entrance),attributed to the Olmec tradition.The pictographs are believed to have beenpainted between 800 and 400 BC. The skeletal remainscould be more recent. About 4500 feet fromthe entrance is a large lake which has not beencrossed by AMCS members. It is not known if morepassage exists on the other side of the lake, buta map which appeared in NATURAL HISTORY indicatesmore passage. About 2500 feet from the entrance

The entrance sink is about 30 feetin diameter. Near one side an opening 8 feet by15 feet drops into a fissure 15 feet wide and 40feet long with an unbroken drop of 220 feet. Thefissure opens into the top of a large room 125feet high, 60 feet wide, and 80 feet long. Shortdrops of 65 feet and 30 feet are necessary to de&cend to reach the main floor.
