Both caves are quitelarge, in some places well over 100 feet in diameter,and both have through-flowing rivers inthem. Since they are actually two separate caves,they more properly would be called the Sumiderodel R!o Chontalcoatlan (lower boca) and Sumiderodel R!o San Jer6nimo (upper boca).Bretz suggests that both caves represent separatephreatic systems which have pirated rivers andhence undergone extensive vadose enlargement.Boulders as large as 5 feet in diameter are sometimescarried by the flooding rivers. Togetherthe two rivers drain about 2000 square kilometersof land. Topographic maps show that the overlanddistance from sink to boca for each river is 4 to5 km. Downstream trom the caves, the two riversjoin to form the Rio Amacusac. Collapse sinks(ponors) are reported to exist above each caveriversystem. Exploration is possible only duringthe dry months from January through May. A Mexicanexploring club has taken many trips throughthe caves, but no AMCS members have yet fUllyexplored the Dos Bocas. The best time to explorethe caves is in April or early May when the leastrain occurs in the area.GRUTAS DE LA ESTRELLA MexicoLocation:Description:About ten miles west of Mogote on the highway fromCacahuamilpa to Toluca.
