Six miles of passage have reportedlybeen explored; however" this figure is verydoubtful 0 Most maps show about one mile of passage"and no additional passage has been found byAMCS members. Commercial tours last up to fourhours. The discovery of the caverns is creditedto an Englishman who entered the cave with his dogthis past century and failed to come out. Ing.Benftez" a priest at San Mateo Ixtla from 1789­1793 mentions a magnificient cavern in a manuscripthe wrote during that periodo The cave"being as large and spectacular as it is" naturallyhas many legends associated with it" and literallythousands of adventurous souls have visited thecave since its discovery. One source gives theearliest known visit to the cave as 1776.
