Modesto G6mez Saldivar, 1898-1966Modesto G6mez Saldivar was born on November4, 1898, in the small town of A1aquines, San LuisPotosi. From here he later moved to the Xi1itla,S.L.P. area where he became the owner of El Ranchode Huitzmo10tit1a o Sr. G6mez lived on the ranch<strong>for</strong> many years where he raised coffee and oranges oThen, on January 7, 1966 he was killed in an automobileaccident while returning from Ciudad Valles.The un<strong>for</strong>tunate accident occured at Kilometer Post440 and afterwards he was taken to Tu1tepec, Mexicowhere he was buried by re1atives o Since then theranch has been sold to lngo Rafael Gonzalez Cisneroswho lives in Mexico CitYo He has hired Sro lsmae1Larios to operate the ranchoWhile living at his ranch near the smallvillage of T1amaya, Sr. G6mez became very wellknown and liked throughout the entire Xilitlaregion. Ever since the first expedition wentinto the area ten years ago (Bob Mitchell of theUniversity of Texas Biology Department visited theranch in 1956), Sr. G6mez has extended his completehospitality to all cavers. He even went so far asto say, 11M! casa es su casa n • Without the ranchas a base of operations, the great p'rogress in e~ploration and mapping of the many sotanos in thearea could not have been accomplished. Includedamong the caves which Sr. G6mez's generosity madethe exploration of possible, is S6tano de T1amaya,the deepest surveyed cave in North America. Allspelunkers who were <strong>for</strong>tunate enough to have hadthe honor of meeting Sr. Modesto G6mez, will longremember him <strong>for</strong> his unending kindness and goodwillto all.Terry Raines
