3<strong>an</strong> <strong>an</strong>gel <strong>but</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>dark</strong>ALAN:CLAIRE:ALAN:CLAIRE:ALAN:KARL:ALAN:CLAIRE:KARL:ALAN:<strong>an</strong> <strong>an</strong>gel<strong>but</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>dark</strong>.That’s how he described her.The words he usedAn <strong>an</strong>gel“<strong>but</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>dark</strong>”They went to a pub.On Star <strong>an</strong>d Garter Hill.People said it was a date.It wasn’t a date.“All I w<strong>an</strong>t is your car.”They had a dr<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong>n went for a walk beside <strong>the</strong> river.They sat on a bench.KARL: Sometimes you don't have to touch a flower -CLAIRE:KARL:CLAIRE:ALAN:KARL:ALAN:KARL:CLAIRE:ALAN:She was bored.She kept text<strong>in</strong>g her friends.to make it grow.“She seemed distracted.”I’m try<strong>in</strong>g to remember <strong>but</strong> all I th<strong>in</strong>k about is her sitt<strong>in</strong>g on thatbench.An <strong>an</strong>gelOverlook<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Thames.Was <strong>the</strong> water still that night ?Peaceful ?<strong>but</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>dark</strong>.She graduated from University with a degree <strong>in</strong> sportsadm<strong>in</strong>istration.Though she chose a different field.British Gas.Ten years.
4CLAIRE:KARL:She was gett<strong>in</strong>g promoted.Const<strong>an</strong>tly promoted.It seemed every time she came around she’d been promoted aga<strong>in</strong>.I started to wonder if <strong>the</strong>re was <strong>an</strong>y higher r<strong>an</strong>k she could bepromoted to.(LAUGHING) “National compli<strong>an</strong>ce m<strong>an</strong>ager.What does that me<strong>an</strong> ?”“Here you go mum.Got you some vouchers.”ALAN: When he went on <strong>the</strong> date -CLAIRE: It wasn’t a date ?Don’t call it a date.She felt sorry for him.Awkward out of place black boy.ALAN:CLAIRE:ALAN:CLAIRE:ALAN:CLAIRE:ALAN:CLAIRE:ALAN:CLAIRE:ALAN:CLAIRE:Don’t make it about that.I’m stat<strong>in</strong>g a fact.He was black.And stupid.She felt sorry for him so she went for a dr<strong>in</strong>k.A dr<strong>in</strong>k.It was not a date.It was because of Fraser.She had just come out of a turbulent relationship.She was completely <strong>in</strong> love with FraserBut he wouldn’t commit to her<strong>in</strong> terms of marriage <strong>an</strong>d Kate, more th<strong>an</strong> <strong>an</strong>yth<strong>in</strong>g,w<strong>an</strong>ted a family.That’s what her friend said.She had such good friends.They loved her.After she disappeared <strong>the</strong>y org<strong>an</strong>ised a search.On Facebook.They didn’t know she was already …Kate was just try<strong>in</strong>g to get over Fraser by go<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>an</strong>d meet<strong>in</strong>go<strong>the</strong>r people
5She was out <strong>an</strong>d about.Not mop<strong>in</strong>g around at home.That’s <strong>the</strong> type of girl she was.Not lett<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>in</strong>gs get her down.That’s what she was do<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>re.How c<strong>an</strong> you call it a date ?ALAN:CLAIRE:KARL:ALAN:CLAIRE:ALAN:CLAIRE:ALAN:CLAIRE:ALAN:CLAIRE:ALAN:He hid <strong>the</strong> knife up his sleeve.He always knew what he was go<strong>in</strong>g to do.But why Kate ?Why her ?He worked as a fitness <strong>in</strong>structor.Who did he <strong>in</strong>struct ?Surely someone at <strong>the</strong> gym must have known.You have a psychotic work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> your midst.“I’ve dropped my keys.We’ve got to go back.”They left <strong>the</strong> bench.Got <strong>in</strong> Kate’s car.Drove off.Kate was alive.My daughter was alive.And that’s when he did it.When <strong>the</strong>y went back.To look for his keys.And Kate took him back.Because that’s how she was.Car<strong>in</strong>gK<strong>in</strong>dAlways look<strong>in</strong>g after stray dogs.But that’s <strong>the</strong> problem with stray dogs.In <strong>the</strong> end one of <strong>the</strong>m willBite you.And it was <strong>the</strong> keys that brought him undone.Kate’s keys.Two days later –CLAIRE: That’s all it took – two days !
6ALAN:CLAIRE:A detective turned up at <strong>the</strong> flat of his friend <strong>in</strong> west London <strong>an</strong>d<strong>in</strong>terviewed him for several hours.Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terview he kept gett<strong>in</strong>g up to visit <strong>the</strong> bathroom.“Weak bladder.”It’s not that weak.ALAN: So <strong>the</strong> detective –CLAIRE:ALAN:CLAIRE:ALAN:CLAIRE:ALAN:CLAIRE:ALAN:CLAIRE:ALAN:CLAIRE:ALAN:Th<strong>in</strong>ks someth<strong>in</strong>g’s upGoes <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> bathroom.He’s dropped Kate’s car keys <strong>in</strong> to <strong>the</strong> toilet.They are sitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> toilet bowl.The m<strong>an</strong> is <strong>an</strong> idiot.He had driven Kate’s carHer grey Volkswagon Golfback through London <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> early hours of <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g.While he drove he was chatt<strong>in</strong>g to his girlfriendOn his mobile.Lauren.Love to meet her.Asi<strong>an</strong>.“This is my boyfriend, KarlHe <strong>the</strong> one what killed that girl.”Lovely couple.Just before midnight he drove across Chiswick Bridge <strong>an</strong>d boughtone pound of dieselOne pound.at a garage <strong>in</strong> Shepherds Bush.He stopped <strong>an</strong>d chatted with o<strong>the</strong>r drivers on <strong>the</strong> forecourt.KARL: “How’s your night ?”CLAIRE: And Kate’s body was literally metres away, ly<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> boot of hercar.KARL:CLAIRE:“Down <strong>in</strong> Richmond. 11ALAN:KARL:I will never forget that.will be like <strong>the</strong> drum beats <strong>in</strong> your heartCLAIRE: Drum beats !KARL:CLAIRE:KARL:ALAN:CLAIRE:ALAN:when she first opened her eyes.Before you closed <strong>the</strong>m.Remember you have not lost her s<strong>in</strong>ce she never lost you.In court, he tries to retract everyth<strong>in</strong>g.Of course.Even though he’s already written <strong>the</strong> letter to me.He’s confessed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> letter.CLAIRE: Through -ALAN:CLAIRE:ALAN:“Crocodile tears”He claims that Kate committed suicide <strong>in</strong> front of him.It’s absurd.Does he serious believe –He says she killed herself by prodd<strong>in</strong>g her head forward on to<strong>the</strong> knife –CLAIRE: 31 times !ALAN: which he was hold<strong>in</strong>g upright <strong>in</strong> his h<strong>an</strong>ds –CLAIRE:KARL:ALAN:KARL:ALAN:KARL:after tearfully tell<strong>in</strong>g him of her problems.“She was prodd<strong>in</strong>g herself <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> neck area <strong>an</strong>d at <strong>the</strong> sametime was pull<strong>in</strong>g her hair so her head was mov<strong>in</strong>g around.”Prodded.Such <strong>an</strong> odd word.“I didn't know what to do.I just stood <strong>the</strong>re –“Prodded.“<strong>in</strong> awe.I realised she passed away.”
12CLAIRE:ALAN:KARL:CLAIRE:KARL:ALAN:KARL:CLAIRE:ALAN :No one must believe this.I feel cold <strong>an</strong>d empty <strong>an</strong>d will never lose that feel<strong>in</strong>g.“I was cry<strong>in</strong>g profusely.”C<strong>an</strong> believe this.“I lay on <strong>the</strong> grass <strong>an</strong>d looked at <strong>the</strong> sky.”As <strong>the</strong> judge sentenced him he said:“You are arrog<strong>an</strong>t, m<strong>an</strong>ipulative, <strong>an</strong>d you are highly d<strong>an</strong>gerous.”The way he said it made me wonder which one of those threehe was receiv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> thirty years for.Kate was so vibr<strong>an</strong>t <strong>an</strong>d full of life.CLAIRE: What’s <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t of liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> this world if this is <strong>the</strong> way of this world ?ALAN: What must it have felt like dur<strong>in</strong>g those last seconds –CLAIRE:ALAN:CLAIRE:ALAN:CLAIRE:KARL:If events like this c<strong>an</strong> occur.Do occur.as she was savagely struck down?If men like Karl Taylor c<strong>an</strong> just murder my daughterThe sheer terror <strong>an</strong>d confusion.<strong>the</strong>n write a letter talk<strong>in</strong>g about “birds s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g” <strong>an</strong>d “flowersgrow<strong>in</strong>g”.An <strong>an</strong>gelALAN: Is that how you see yourself Karl ?CLAIRE:I keep hav<strong>in</strong>g nightmares.ALAN: An <strong>an</strong>gel ?KARL:CLAIRE:ALAN:<strong>but</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>dark</strong>.I see him.The knife.Kate.The sheer terror <strong>an</strong>d confusion.
