German Study File
This extensive collection of research copies and working papers was compiled by Dr.
Ellen Merrill. It consists of 20 boxes, or approximately 10 linear feet. The inventory that
follows is based on Dr. Merrill’s original box and file labels.
In varying levels of detail, the file touches upon the entirety of German-Louisiana
history. On one extreme end of the range is found material about the German Coast in
the 1720s (e.g., a copy of a French language census of the German Coast in 1724), on the
other a copy of the Covenant Home newsletter “Tidbits” from 1984, and copies of
articles about the history of Germantown clipped from the Minden Press-Herald in the
1970s. In between, there is material by many different authors relating in different ways
to German history in New Orleans and Louisiana: material relating to the history of
German immigration to and settlement of the region (mostly copies of essays by authors
who were themselves members of the German community, but also copies of original
“primary source documents”), material relating to German churches and charitable
organizations, material relating to German business and political and consular affairs.
There is also selected genealogical information on specific persons consisting of copies
of documents from German state archives.
A notable component of the German Study File is the material on Germantown and
Robert’s Cove, La., two rural communities of German heritage. This material, consisting
mostly of copies and newspaper clippings, deals with an element of German history in
Louisiana which is absent from the Deutsches Haus Archives, the Germania Lodge
materials, or any of THNOC’s other German-related manuscripts holdings.
Additionally, there is one record storage box containing research-related correspondence
of Dr. Merrill’s. The 180 folders in the box contain letters and receipts to and from
various local and foreign persons, archives, and dealers.
