<strong>German</strong> <strong>Study</strong> <strong>File</strong><br />

This extensive collection of research copies and working papers was compiled by Dr.<br />

Ellen Merrill. It consists of 20 boxes, or approximately 10 linear feet. The inventory that<br />

follows is based on Dr. Merrill’s original box and file labels.<br />

In varying levels of detail, the file touches upon the entirety of <strong>German</strong>-Louisiana<br />

history. On one extreme end of the range is found material about the <strong>German</strong> Coast in<br />

the 1720s (e.g., a copy of a French language census of the <strong>German</strong> Coast in 1724), on the<br />

other a copy of the Covenant Home newsletter “Tidbits” from 1984, and copies of<br />

articles about the history of <strong>German</strong>town clipped from the Minden Press-Herald in the<br />

1970s. In between, there is material by many different authors relating in different ways<br />

to <strong>German</strong> history in <strong>New</strong> <strong>Orleans</strong> and Louisiana: material relating to the history of<br />

<strong>German</strong> immigration to and settlement of the region (mostly copies of essays by authors<br />

who were themselves members of the <strong>German</strong> community, but also copies of original<br />

“primary source documents”), material relating to <strong>German</strong> churches and charitable<br />

organizations, material relating to <strong>German</strong> business and political and consular affairs.<br />

There is also selected genealogical information on specific persons consisting of copies<br />

of documents from <strong>German</strong> state archives.<br />

A notable component of the <strong>German</strong> <strong>Study</strong> <strong>File</strong> is the material on <strong>German</strong>town and<br />

Robert’s Cove, La., two rural communities of <strong>German</strong> heritage. This material, consisting<br />

mostly of copies and newspaper clippings, deals with an element of <strong>German</strong> history in<br />

Louisiana which is absent from the Deutsches Haus Archives, the <strong>German</strong>ia Lodge<br />

materials, or any of THNOC’s other <strong>German</strong>-related manuscripts holdings.<br />

Additionally, there is one record storage box containing research-related correspondence<br />

of Dr. Merrill’s. The 180 folders in the box contain letters and receipts to and from<br />

various local and foreign persons, archives, and dealers.<br />
