JENNIFER FELTYBERGER, BFA 94 Printmaking/Fibers, was part of “The Allegheny Art Show” at Joshua’s Café in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania in June 2006. It was a group show of all the employees at Allegheny Art Company, an art supply store where Jennifer has been a picture framer for the past ten years. 95 C ANDICE SMITH CORBY, BFA Painting, was part of a group show, “Sweetness,” at Boston University’s Sherman Gallery. She will have a solo show of new drawings and paintings at Miller Block Gallery in Boston during September and October, 2006. She also had a baby named Jack in November of 2006. CANDICE SMITH CORBY BFA ’95, “ON THE UP AND UP,” GOUACHE & WATERCOLOR ON PAPER, 28 X 22 INCHES, 2004. 22 TYLER GESTURES WINTER 2006 98 JASON LOCKYER, BFA Painting, has been creating groundbreaking short films since 2001.Throughout that time he has shown his films both nationally and internationally in galleries and theaters. Most recently, his film “Look at Me Now” screened at The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. You can view his films at www.benderfilms.com. TED MAUSETH, MFA Graphic Design, creative director of Mauseth Design, has joined the faculty at Parsons School of Design, NYC. Prior to the formation of Mauseth Design in 2004, Mauseth established his professional design foundation in Manhattan holding senior level positions at Rainbow Media, Inc. and Parham Santana. He maintains a strong network in the creative community serving on the Board of Directors of the Type Directors Club and as a member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts. KATHLEEN PEARSON, BFA Painting, collaborated with her partner, Lisa Martin, on her most recent project, Caleb Alexander Pearson, who was born on November 12, 2005. BETH REISMAN, BFA Painting, had a solo exhibition of paintings in Miami, Florida from September until October of 2006 at David Castillo Contemporary and Modern Art. She will also be in a group exhibition titled “Destroy the City” during Art Basel Miami at this venue in December. 99 SEAN ROACH, BFA Painting, graduated from Tyler School of Art with a fine arts degree in painting, but moved into sculpture via theatrical set production. In celebration of Planters Peanuts 100th anniversary, Planters unveils a Mr. Peanut Statue sculpted by Sean Roach. The statue, which looks like an authentic bronze casting, is actually made of steel, foam and plastic coated with bronze. 01 DANIELLE VARDAKAS, BFA Ceramics, has been teaching dance at Maricopa Community Colleges of Phoenix, AZ and at The Arts Academy Grade School. She is returning to Philadelphia to be married in September 2006 to Scott Ducko, a producer as well as a live sound and studio engineer. 04 2006 Works on Paper R ACHEL BOMZE, Rachel Bomze (Katz), MFA Painting, currently teaches drawing at Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ. She also teaches art classes at the Perkins Art Center in Moorestown, NJ. Her work was recently exhibited at Gallery 216 at Rowan University in October. RACHEL BOMZE MFA ’04, “BLACK AND GOLD,” 53.5 X 120 INCHES, INK AND ACRYLIC ON PAPER, 2005. also contributed a piece of artwork for the Inliquid.com V.6.O benefit auction at the beginning of October. Rachel continues to make art in her studio, located at the Crane Arts Building in Philadelphia. ELIZABETH MAPLESDEN, BFA Graphic and Interactive Design, was recently notified that her work will appear in Print magazine’s 2006 “Print Regional Annual.” 05 ALEXIS HUGO NUTINI, MFA Printmaking, had an exhibition entitled, “Reflection” of prints and woodblocks carved in Spain and Italy from August 16th through August 30th, 2006 at the Mexico Lindo in Pittsburgh, PA. 06 NILS ORTH, BFA Photography, was the winner of the sixth annual Adobe Design Achievement Awards in the digital photography category. This is the premier student design competition that honors the world’s most talented student graphic designers, photographers, illustrators, animators, digital filmmakers, and computer artists from the top design, film, and broadcast institutions. Using the latest Adobe products, more than 1,800 students from twenty-four countries competed in the annual program. I N M E M O R I A M JEFFREY WASSERMAN, BFA ’68 in painting, passed away on July 2, 2006 at his home in Millerton, New York after battling cancer. He was 59 years old. Wasserman became known in New York for his “buoyant, vividly colorful and poetically suggestive abstractions.” “His paintings were made with loose, spontaneous touch in thin layers, featured elemental shapes, arabesque forms and archetypal symbols folded into layered, luminously colored spaces” described Ken Johnson of the New York Times. His memory lives with his wife Anne Newburg, his daughter Jane, and son Hugo. Laurie Simmons, BFA ’71, gave the eulogy. VIVIAN BERGENFELD, continuing education student Printmaking and Painting at Tyler, passed away in 2004. She received her teaching certificate in the School of Industrial Design at Philadelphia College of Art and University of the Arts. Since 1976 she has inspired the creativity in students as a printmaking instructor at various institutions including Hussian School of Art, Cheltenham Art Center, and Chestnut Hill College. Her last show was “Vivian Bergenfeld/Evie Liebowitz, Two Artists Two Views” shown June 12th through July 14th, 2006 at the Cheltenham Center for the Arts. She is an artist that will be remembered in the hearts of many. CYNTHIA LAWRENCE died on July 26 after a long and heroic struggle against cancer. She endured debilitating health problems with quiet fortitude and refused to allow the disease to limit her activities. Cynthia, who received her BA from Oberlin and her MA and PhD from the University of Chicago (1978) and was a professor in the Department of Art History at Temple University when she retired in 2004. Her fields of study embraced both painting and sculpture in both Flanders and The Netherlands. Cynthia was hired at the rank of Associate Professor at Temple University in 1986 and rose to the rank of Professor in 1991. Known as a thoughtful and rigorous teacher, she will be missed by her students and colleagues. TYLER GESTURES WINTER 2006 23
