THAI JOURNAL OTOLARYNGOLOGY HEAD NECK SURGERYVol 10 No.4 : Oct. - Dec. 200941Correlation between anatomic variations of nose and paranasalsinus from CT scan and facial pain in Chiang Mai Hospital :a case-control studyAbstractObjective : To study the association between facial pain and the prevalence of anatomical variation ofthe nasal cavity and paranasal sinus.Design : Retrospective Case - Control Studyการศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ของลักษณะการแปรปรวนทางกายภาพบริเวณโพรงจมูกและไซนัสMethods : CT scans of the paranasal sinus and medical records, obtained from adult patients undergoingevaluation at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital from 1 st January 2001 to 31 st May 2008, werereviewed. The patients were divided into 2 groups: the facial pain group (26 patients) and the nonfacialpain as the controlled group (60 patients). The patients underwent CT scan for non rhinologicdiagnosis eg. salivary gland tumor. The patients with previous sinus surgery, facial trauma, sinusitis,nasal cavity and paranasal sinus tumors or polyps, and Lund score > 4 were excluded.Result : The prevalence of anatomical variation of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinus in facial paingroup (26 patients) were 69.2% of Agger nasi cells. Most of the presented bony anatomical variationsbetween the two groups showed no significant difference, except the deviated nasal septum weresignificantly more common in the facial pain groups than the non facial pain group (p = 0.046 )Conclusion : There was no significantly different prevalence of most bony anatomical variationbetween facial pain and non facial pain group.Keywords : facial pain, anatomical variation Nose, Paranasal sinus, CT scan
