POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMME FORLANGUAGE PRACTICEThe <strong>Postgraduate</strong> Programme for Language Practice <strong>of</strong>fers a Diploma,and a Master's degree. Students specialize in any one <strong>of</strong> five fields:(1) Translation; (2) Interpreting; (3) Lexicography and Terminology;(4) Language Management; and (5) Language Technology.The presentation <strong>of</strong> modules is subject to <strong>the</strong> availability <strong>of</strong>lecturers.1. CAREER OPPORTUNITIESThe postgraduate courses in Language Practice are market-driven andoutcomes-based. The career opportunities for students completing <strong>the</strong>courses include those <strong>of</strong> translator, conference interpreter,lexicographer, terminologist, language planner and manager, andlanguage technologist.2. ADMISSION TO THE COURSES; THE RELATIONSHIPBETWEEN THE DIPLOMA AND THE M.A. DEGREEIn general, students must fulfil <strong>the</strong> requirements <strong>of</strong> 1.4 <strong>of</strong> GeneralInformation. Those requirements are relaxed in that a wide range <strong>of</strong>Bachelor's degrees are considered appropriate for admission to coursesin <strong>the</strong> Language Practice Programme. Students must apply to <strong>the</strong>Director, who may admit <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong> Programme subject to <strong>the</strong>ir takingadditional modules.The Diploma is <strong>the</strong> equivalent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first year <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Master's degree.For this reason, students registered for <strong>the</strong> Diploma who wish tocontinue may be admitted to <strong>the</strong> second year <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Master's degree,and students registered for <strong>the</strong> Master's degree may "exit" with aDiploma if <strong>the</strong>y wish to discontinue studies after completing <strong>the</strong>ir firstyear <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Master's degree.88<strong>Postgraduate</strong> Calendar 2004 – Faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Humanities
