POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMME FORLANGUAGE PRACTICEThe Postgraduate Programme for Language Practice offers a Diploma,and a Master's degree. Students specialize in any one of five fields:(1) Translation; (2) Interpreting; (3) Lexicography and Terminology;(4) Language Management; and (5) Language Technology.The presentation of modules is subject to the availability oflecturers.1. CAREER OPPORTUNITIESThe postgraduate courses in Language Practice are market-driven andoutcomes-based. The career opportunities for students completing thecourses include those of translator, conference interpreter,lexicographer, terminologist, language planner and manager, andlanguage technologist.2. ADMISSION TO THE COURSES; THE RELATIONSHIPBETWEEN THE DIPLOMA AND THE M.A. DEGREEIn general, students must fulfil the requirements of 1.4 of GeneralInformation. Those requirements are relaxed in that a wide range ofBachelor's degrees are considered appropriate for admission to coursesin the Language Practice Programme. Students must apply to theDirector, who may admit them to the Programme subject to their takingadditional modules.The Diploma is the equivalent of the first year of the Master's degree.For this reason, students registered for the Diploma who wish tocontinue may be admitted to the second year of the Master's degree,and students registered for the Master's degree may "exit" with aDiploma if they wish to discontinue studies after completing their firstyear of the Master's degree.88Postgraduate Calendar 2004 – Faculty of the Humanities
