Admission to <strong>the</strong> honours degree in History is subject to approvalby <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> department.2. Students must have completed a three-year bachelor's degree, orbe in possession <strong>of</strong> an equivalent qualification, in which case anadditional evaluation may be required before admission.CURRICULUMA taught course comprising four three-hour papers (32 credits each): GES601 Subject <strong>the</strong>ory, research methodology and modernhistoriography (32 credits) GES602 South African history (32 credits) GES603 The history <strong>of</strong> Africa (32 credits) GES604 The history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world (32 credits)(Total: 4 x 32 = 128)ORCandidates take a taught course comprising a compulsory paper(GES601), any two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> remaining three papers (GES602, GES603,GES604) and EITHER (i) a fourth paper <strong>of</strong> at least 32 credits from arelated discipline, OR (ii) write a minor research project <strong>of</strong> 50-60 pagestext (GES691), OR (iii) do a structured internship (GES605) at a suitableinstitution <strong>of</strong>fering in-service training (such as <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> LandAffairs, <strong>the</strong> National Museum, or <strong>the</strong> <strong>Free</strong> <strong>State</strong> Archives).
