Special PurposeAssembliesChlorine Market DigestThe chemical element, chlorine, has many organic and inorganicderivations, which in turn have literally hundreds of end-uses:polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, refrigerants, solvents, silicones, food and drug additives and processing, perfumes, missiles, metalprocessing –the list is endless. In its "as is" state, chlorine is widely used in the pulp and paperindustry for bleaching paper, as well as in water purification.Chlorine is one of the most difficult and hazardous chemicals tohandle. At ordinary temperatures chlorine is a gas with a greenish-yellowcolor and a sharp irritating odor. When the gas iscooled at atmospheric pressure, it liquifies at about -30 o F, forminga clear amber liquid.Liquid and gaseous chlorine can be either "dry" (sometimes calledanhydrous) or "wet" (sometimes called moist). Dry chlorine doesnot contain any water. Wet chlorine, however, does contain somewater and it is this combination of chlorine and water which willform hydrochloric and hypochlorous acids which are extremelycorrosive to all common metals such as Monel, stainless steel, bronze and steel.Typically, the manufactured chlorine is loaded into railroad tankcars and highway tank trucks at approximately -18 o C (0 o F) atabout 100 psi. Unloading at their end users at about the sameconditions. Each loading station usually employs from 1 to 3 loading hoses, and one "sniffer" hose (to bleed off any vaporized chlorine), withlengths varying from 6' to 12'. The most common length is 8'.A common derivative of chlorine, anhydrous hydrochloric acid(HCL), also poses a tough transfer problem. Loading is typicallydone with one loading hose and one sniffer hose, with the serviceconditions at about -57 o C (-70 o F) at 70 to 135 psi.Typical chlorine unloadingYes, We Have A SafeSolution For YourChlorine Transfer 1 Full flow 1" I.D. convoluted Teflon innercore;reinforced with a double layer of PVDF braid2 Schedule 80 Monel male swage fittings (1" -11-1/2 NPT).3 C.P.E. rubber abrasion jacket –compoundedand pin-pricked for chlorine service.Typical Thorburn TC818 hose construction4 Heavy 300 series stainless abrasion jacketretainer –prevents snagging or tearing of jacketends.73
