At ordinary temperatures chlorine is a gas with a greenish-yellowcolor and a sharp irritating odor. When the gas iscooled at atmospheric pressure, it liquifies at about -30 o F, forminga clear amber liquid.Liquid and gaseous chlorine can be either "dry" (sometimes calledanhydrous) or "wet" (sometimes called moist). Dry chlorine doesnot contain any water. Wet chlorine, however, does contain somewater and it is this combination of chlorine and water which willform hydrochloric and hypochlorous acids which are extremelycorrosive to all common metals such as Monel, stainless steel,bronze and steel.Typically, the manufactured chlorine is loaded into railroad tankcars and highway tank trucks at approximately -18 o C (0 o F) atabout 100 psi.
