Cultural scene & nightlife
An evening in Chemnitz doesn’t always have to mean the opera,
the theatre or a concert. When the sun sets, the nightlife in the
town’s numerous pubs, bars and clubs comes to life. Live music,
hot rhythms and the disco beat ensure that the party mood in
many places lasts into the early hours of the morning. In addition

Christmas market
Every year during Advent about 170 stalls transform the area
around Chemnitz’s town hall into a Christmas wonderland in the
style of the local mountain region known as the Erzgebirge. The
festive backdrop of Chemnitz’s new town centre makes the
traditional market with its typical range of regional folk art, local
specialties, Christmas delicacies of all kinds, and pretty gift ideas
a quite special pre-Christmas experience for people of all ages.

Day Trip Route Chemnitz - Augustusburg
This bus route is an easy way to get to exciting destinations outside
the town gates. The bus runs between Chemnitz/Market Hall and
Augustusburg Castle every Sunday and on public holidays from the
end of March to the end of October. Tickets can be bought from the
bus driver.

Kassberg
Kassberg is Chemnitz’s most prestigious residential quarter from
an art-historical point of view, and an architectural jewel of the
Art Nouveau era and the so-called “Gründerzeit”, the period of
rapid industrial expansion in Germany from 1871. About 400 of
the historical buildings are under preservation orders and mainly
date back to the time between 1870 and 1930 – amongst them
residential buildings, churches, schools, as well as the mediaeval

Red Tower [ C 2 ]
This is the oldest preserved famous landmark of the city. The tower was
built during the 12th century and over the years served as living quarters,
part of the city’s fortification system, and court location and jail. Today,
the Red Tower is used as a venue for exhibits and is part of the city
sightseeing tour.

Schlossberg
Schlossberg is regarded as the place where the town was founded. Monks
settled here in the 12th century. These days you can roam through the
past in the Schlosskirche (Castle Church) and Schlossberg Museum. At
the foot of the mountain, cosy pubs in pretty half-timbered buildings
invite you to linger.
Schlossteich (Castle Pond) [ B, C 1 ]
The extensive area around the Castle Pond, created in the 15th century,
is a popular destination for everyone looking for rest and relaxation,
whether it’s a peaceful walk, a bike ride or a row across the lake.
Shopping in the town centre [ C 2 ]
A shopping expedition in the completely remodelled centre of Chemnitz
is not something you should miss. You can get nearly everything you
desire here. The glass-fronted Galeria Kaufhof department store, the
shopping area of Galerie Roter Turm (Red Tower Gallery), the Town Hall
Shopping Arcade or the fashion store Peek & Cloppenburg invite you to
stroll around and shop. Those with a more individual style will certainly
have a splendid time in the shops and boutiques in Rosenhof as well as
on the highly traditional street called Innere Klosterstrasse.
Sonnenberg
Sonnenberg emerged as a typical working-class residential area in the
so-called “Gründerzeit”, the period of rapid industrial expansion in
Germany from 1871. Of particular note are the neo-gothic St. Mark’s
Church and today’s “Federal Building of the Worker Samaritan
Federation” in the Art Deco style.

Türmer (The Chemnitz Town Crier)
Few people know as much about the history of the city hall building
and town as the man with the traditional costume. The tradition of the
“Türmer” goes back many centuries to 1488 and is today carefully and
lovingly preserved and cultivated.

Town centre
If you haven’t been in Chemnitz for a couple of years, you’ll hardly
recognise the town centre. Extravagantly designed glass-fronted
department stores nowadays form an exciting contrast to the town’s
historical facade. All this is interspersed with lively squares, inviting
shopping arcades, boutiques, cosy bistros, and a lot of space for lively
art and culture. But take a look for yourself!
Theatre Square
Surrounded by a prestigious opera house, the King Albert Museum, the
hotel and restaurant Chemnitzer Hof and the St. Peter’s Church, Theatre
Square is architecturally one of town’s most beautiful ensemble of buildings.
Richard Möbius, a former government building officer of the town
of Chemnitz, had the dream of having a complex created here which
would conform with prevailing tastes and which would also display unity.
