When it charges a <strong>battery</strong>, the charger drawselectrical current from the mains and supplies it to the <strong>battery</strong>. However, various losses arise during the transformati<strong>on</strong>process:■■■Power factor: this is an expressi<strong>on</strong> of the relati<strong>on</strong>ship between the total absorbed power and the power effectivelyused by the charger. This will typically be about 90% for “OK” and “HF” <strong>chargers</strong>, but it falls to <strong>on</strong>ly about 55% for“GK” <strong>chargers</strong>. There are also “HF” <strong>chargers</strong> with an A-PFC circuit (Active Power Factor Correcti<strong>on</strong>) that reach100%. Large industrial electricity c<strong>on</strong>sumers are often charged <strong>on</strong> the basis of the power factor, and indeed “GK”<strong>chargers</strong> use almost twice as much electricity as effectively supplied to the <strong>battery</strong>.Efficiency: during the c<strong>on</strong>versi<strong>on</strong> from supply voltage to the <strong>battery</strong> voltage energy is also lost in the form of heat. This c<strong>on</strong>trol has other advantages as well, such as the ability to generate a variety of charging curves.A high frequency charger (an “HF” charger) c<strong>on</strong>tains additi<strong>on</strong>al comp<strong>on</strong>ents that first c<strong>on</strong>vert the mains voltage to amuch higher frequency (e.g. to 100,000 Hertz).
