But thoseroads are already pockedwith potholes and grassand weeds are poking upthrough the surface.“On Park and Brownstreets there is actuallygrass coming up throughthe blacktop,” said councilmember Bob Wells. “We justresurfaced these roads sixmonths ago. This is happeningon roads all over the city.“We’ve got to approve thisand get it done so we can getmore life than two years outof these new roads.”At a meeting Thursdaynight, the rest of the councilagreed. They unanimouslyapproved tweaking the budgetso they could get a totalof $35,000 into the streetrepair account. That’s theprojected budget total toresurface Sandy Bass Laneand fix the pothole problempopping up on roads all overtown.Wells said there are moreroads slated to be resurfaced,including Pettit andBurke streets, but that willcost another $34,400, which“is not feasible this year.”New officer tocutd own on weedsThe council also unanimouslyapproved hiring a“code service official” on aNEWARKCity wages waron street grasspart-time basis to help thecity enforce ordinances.“We need them to identifyowners of property or renters,send out certified lettersand produce spreadsheets,”said city secretary DianeRasor.She said it’s important forwhoever they hire to stayon top of the enforcementprocess because it involvesseveral steps. Rasor is alsoa certified code enforcementofficer and could help. Theyalready have an individualin mind who moonlights asa martial arts instructor.The council approved themayor to hire the officer forfive to 10 hours per weekat a wage not to exceed $20per hour. Depending on howmuch they work, it will costthe city between $3,000 and$6,000 to fund the positionfor the remainder of the fiscalyear.City notes Council agreed to againsponsor the Annual EasterEgg Hunt. The hunt will occuron the grounds outsideCity Hall from 10:30 a.m.to noon on Saturday, March<strong>23</strong>, and will feature an egghunt, snacks, games andprizes. If there is inclementweather the hunt will moveinto the community center. Council reviewed photosand progress of volunteersworking on water andsewer line projects towardthe STEP grant. City auditor Bill Sporereviewed the audit of lastyear’s fiscal budget with thecouncil.
