"am"Go90 THE FAITH OF OUR FATHERS.I am with you all days, even to the consummationof the world."lHe begins by asserting His own divine authorityand mission. "Allpower is etc. Thatgiven,"power He then delegates to His Apostles and totheir successors :ye, therefore, and teach allnations,"etc. He does not instruct them to scatterBibles broadcast over the earth, but to teach byword of mouth. "And behold!" Our Saviournever arrests the attention of His hearers by usingthe interjection, behold, unless when He has something unusually solemn and extraordinary to communicate. An important announcement is sure tofollow this word. "Behold, I am with you."These words, "I am with you"are frequentlyaddressed in Sacred Scripture, by the Almighty, toHis Prophets and Patriarchs, and they alwaysimply a special presence and a particular super1vision of the Deity. They convey the same meaning in the present instance. Christ says equivalently,I who the way, the truth, and the life,"willprotect you fiom error, and will guide you in yourspeech.I will be with you, not merely during yournatural lives, not for a century only, but all days,at all times, without intermission, even to the endof the world.These words of Jesus Christ establish two important facts : 1. A promise to guard His Church fromerror. 2. A promise that His presence with the-Matt, xxviii.2Ex. iii. 12 ;Jer. xv. 20, etc.
