"THE SACRIFICE OF THE MASS. 353The Prophet Isaiah declared that the Jewishsacrifices had become displeasing to God, and wouldbe abolished. To what purpose," says the Lordby His prophet, "do youoffer Me the multitudeof your victims? ... I desire not holocausts oframs,. . . and blood of calves and lambs and buckgoats.. . . Offer sacrifice no more in vain." *But did God, in rejecting the Jewish oblations,intend to abolish sacrifices altogether? By nomeans. On the contrary, He clearly predicts, bythe mouth of the Prophet Malachiah, that the immolations of the Jews would be succeeded by a cleanvictim, which would be offered up not on a singlealtar, as was the case in Jerusalem, but in every partof the known world. Listen to the significant wordsaddressed to the Jews by this "prophet I have no:pleasure in you, saith the Lord of hosts, and I willnot receive a of gift your hand. For, from the rising of the sun, even to the going down, My Name isgreat among the Gentiles, and in every place thereis sacrifice, and there isoffered to My Name a cleanoblation ; for, My Name is great among the Gentiles,2saith the Lord of hosts." The prophet here clearlyforetells that an acceptable oblation would be offeredto God not by Jews, but by Gentiles; not merelv inJerusalem, but in every place from the rising to thesetting of the sun. These prophetic words musthave been fulfilled. Where shall we find the fulfil*ment of the prophecy?iIsaiah i. 11-13.30* XaMai. i. 10, 11.
