Gett<strong>in</strong>g to the hospitalIt can sometimes be difficult to f<strong>in</strong>d a car park<strong>in</strong>gspace at our hospital. For <strong>this</strong> reason we suggestthat if possible <strong>you</strong> and <strong>you</strong>r visitors <strong>us</strong>e our Park& Ride service or public transport.PARK & RIDEOur Dartl<strong>in</strong>e PR3 Park & Ride b<strong>us</strong> is quick and<strong>in</strong>expensive. It runs to the RD&E from Digby (nearTesco, the railway station and junction 30 of theM5). See map overleaf. There are signs alongsome of the ma<strong>in</strong> roads <strong>in</strong>to Exeter po<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g tothe RD&E Park & Ride.The Park & Ride leaves Digby on the hour andevery ten m<strong>in</strong>utes Monday to Friday 9am - 6pm.Park<strong>in</strong>g is free and security staff look after the carpark, which is locked at 7.30pm. The b<strong>us</strong> is free if<strong>you</strong> have a <strong>Devon</strong>wide b<strong>us</strong> pass.BY BUSStagecoach b<strong>us</strong>es H1 and H2 run to the RD&Eevery 15 m<strong>in</strong>utes from Exeter High Street and StDavid’s station from around 7am - 9pm Monday- Saturday. Gett<strong>in</strong>g to the hospitalBY TRAINExeter Central and Exeter St David’s are aboutthree miles away. Stagecoach b<strong>us</strong>es H1 and H2run to the RD&E from Exeter St David’s and fromthe High Street. They also stop at Central Station.BY CARFollow signposts to the hospital from most of thema<strong>in</strong> routes <strong>in</strong>to Exeter. Follow signposts <strong>in</strong> thehospital grounds to our car parks. Car park<strong>in</strong>g isby pay & display, so <strong>please</strong> br<strong>in</strong>g change. Seepage 8 for details.Disabled permit holders can park free of charge<strong>in</strong> any pay & display car park. In addition, thereare a number of designated disabled badgeholderspaces at the entrance to most build<strong>in</strong>gsaround the site. There is a ma<strong>in</strong> disabled park<strong>in</strong>garea signposted at the Barrack Road entrance.6


NHS TRANSPORTNHS transport is only available if <strong>you</strong> have amedical <strong>need</strong> that means <strong>you</strong> cannot <strong>us</strong>e otherforms of transport. This is provided by SouthWestern Ambulance Service. Dur<strong>in</strong>g 2006 we willbe help<strong>in</strong>g to develop a system of ‘supportedtravel’ which means that cars may be availableto help <strong>you</strong> get to the hospital, although therewill be a charge for <strong>this</strong>.Unfortunately liv<strong>in</strong>g a long way from the RD&Eor be<strong>in</strong>g on a low <strong>in</strong>come does not mean that<strong>you</strong> will be provided with free transport. Thoseon a low <strong>in</strong>come may be able to get assistance.Please ask <strong>you</strong>r ward team about <strong>this</strong>, orvisit our general office(01392 402382) <strong>in</strong> thema<strong>in</strong> entrance. This isopen Monday toThursday 8.30am - 5pm/Friday 8.30am - 4.30pm.Why not <strong>us</strong>e our Park& Ride? It’s quick, easyand cheaper thanhospital park<strong>in</strong>g.7


What to br<strong>in</strong>gany medic<strong>in</strong>es, tablets or <strong>in</strong>halers that <strong>you</strong>take, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g prescriptions, medic<strong>in</strong>es that<strong>you</strong> have bought or alternative medic<strong>in</strong>es,such as herbal remedies. (It is vital thatwe know about all of <strong>you</strong>r medication);nightwear, dress<strong>in</strong>g gown and slippers;comfortable daywear and underwear;tissues (tissues are more hygienic thanhandkerchiefs) and wet wipes;a toothbr<strong>us</strong>h, toothpaste, soap, deodorantand any other toiletries such as shav<strong>in</strong>gequipment;bath towel and a flannel or sponge if required;sanitary products such as tampons if required;someth<strong>in</strong>g to read;any aid that <strong>you</strong> would normally <strong>us</strong>e - forexample, spectacles, walk<strong>in</strong>g frame, stick,crutches, wheelchair, prosthesis;bottle of squash, if <strong>you</strong> want;private <strong>in</strong>surance details if appropriate;items of religio<strong>us</strong> or spiritual importance;change for newspapers, BT payphone or ourbedside TV and phone service, Patientl<strong>in</strong>e(see page 21);change for car park<strong>in</strong>g. You pay for twohours, four hours or a full day. It costs £5.60for a full day and tickets are available fromthe ticket mach<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong> the car parks. You canalso buy a week’s permit from the generaloffice <strong>in</strong> the ma<strong>in</strong> entrance (for open<strong>in</strong>ghours see page 7). CancellationsWe are a b<strong>us</strong>y hospital and see well over 50,000emergency patients each year. This is on topof our planned work and we have to see ouremergency patients as a priority.This can mean that on very rare occasions wehave to cancel some of our planned work. Weare very reluctant to cancel a patient’s dateto come <strong>in</strong>to hospital beca<strong>us</strong>e we know howmuch stress <strong>this</strong> can ca<strong>us</strong>e. We work very hardto ensure <strong>this</strong> is someth<strong>in</strong>g we have to do only <strong>in</strong>exceptional circumstances.But if we do have to cancel <strong>you</strong>r admission date<strong>please</strong> accept our apologies. We will rearrange<strong>you</strong>r new date as soon as possible.Where were <strong>you</strong>?Each year, around 800 people miss their <strong>in</strong>patientappo<strong>in</strong>tment at the RD&E.Please do not be one of them: keep<strong>in</strong>g <strong>you</strong>rappo<strong>in</strong>tment will mean that <strong>you</strong> get thetreatment <strong>you</strong> <strong>need</strong>. It will also help <strong>us</strong> providea more efficient service for patients. Missedappo<strong>in</strong>tments add to wait<strong>in</strong>g times and cost theNHS £millions each year.<strong>If</strong> <strong>you</strong> really can’t make it <strong>please</strong> let <strong>us</strong> know sothat we can re-allocate <strong>you</strong>r appo<strong>in</strong>tment tosomeone else andarrange a newtime for <strong>you</strong>.Write <strong>you</strong>r time<strong>in</strong> here as arem<strong>in</strong>der to<strong>you</strong>rself.My hospitalappo<strong>in</strong>tment:9


What not to br<strong>in</strong>gPlease do not br<strong>in</strong>g:<strong>large</strong> amounts of money;jewellery, valuable items or anyth<strong>in</strong>g withstrong sentimental value;television or radio;alcohol or tobacco.<strong>If</strong> <strong>you</strong> have to br<strong>in</strong>g valuables <strong>please</strong> ask a nurseto store them safely for <strong>you</strong>. Please ensure that<strong>you</strong> get a receipt for <strong>you</strong>r valuables. We are sorrybut we cannot accept responsibility for loss ordamage to items that <strong>you</strong> did not give to <strong>us</strong> forsafe-keep<strong>in</strong>g.Patient identification bandsTwo identification bands will be placed on <strong>you</strong>when <strong>you</strong> are admitted to hospital. The bandswill be placed on both arms or on an arm anda leg. This is to ensure that we are safely able toidentify <strong>you</strong> even if one of the bands is removedfor any reason.The band conta<strong>in</strong>s details such as <strong>you</strong>r nameand hospital number. Nurses and doctors canthen easily identify <strong>you</strong> before carry<strong>in</strong>g out allprocedures such as giv<strong>in</strong>g medic<strong>in</strong>e or tak<strong>in</strong>g<strong>you</strong> <strong>in</strong>to theatre.It is important to make sure that <strong>you</strong> have anidentification band on at all times dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>you</strong>rstay <strong>in</strong> hospital. <strong>If</strong> <strong>you</strong> do not have a band on orit becomes unreadable or uncomfortable <strong>please</strong>ask a nurse to give <strong>you</strong> a new one.10

We can arrange languagetranslation if <strong>you</strong> do not speak English or havehear<strong>in</strong>g problems;disc<strong>us</strong>s with <strong>you</strong> treatments and procedureswe recommend and carry out;describe the potential benefits and risks oftreatment and disc<strong>us</strong>s any alternatives;ask <strong>you</strong> for <strong>you</strong>r fully-<strong>in</strong>formed consent to anyoperation, procedure or treatment;keep the <strong><strong>in</strong>formation</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>you</strong>r recordsconfidential, <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e with the Data ProtectionAct 1998;give <strong>you</strong> the opportunity to see <strong>you</strong>r patientrecords if <strong>you</strong> wish, <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e with the DataProtection Act 1998;work with other organisations <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> <strong>you</strong>rcare and share <strong><strong>in</strong>formation</strong> about <strong>you</strong> only for<strong>you</strong>r benefit and as necessary, remov<strong>in</strong>gidentify<strong>in</strong>g details where we can;always treat <strong>you</strong> with dignity and respect;keep <strong>you</strong>r relatives or carers <strong>in</strong>formed of <strong>you</strong>rprogress, if <strong>you</strong> wish;welcome comments about our service anddeal with <strong>you</strong>r concerns or compla<strong>in</strong>ts asquickly as possible (see page14).CLEANLINESS We pay close attention tocleanl<strong>in</strong>ess and <strong>in</strong>fection control standards. Wewere one of the UK’s first hospitals to implementa campaign to improve hand hygiene. Alcoholgel is available on all beds and easily accessed<strong>in</strong> other departments. This gel is particularlyeffective at kill<strong>in</strong>g germs on hands. Generalcleanl<strong>in</strong>ess standards are also a priority and areregularly monitored and improved.11


What we ask of <strong>you</strong>give <strong>us</strong> all the necessary <strong><strong>in</strong>formation</strong> about<strong>you</strong>r condition, symptoms and medication;treat our staff with respect;help to feed <strong>you</strong>rself, keep mobile and lookafter personal hygiene as far as <strong>you</strong> can;organise <strong>you</strong>r transport home if possible.Please speak with a member of the wardteam if <strong>this</strong> is difficult;tell <strong>us</strong> as soon as <strong>you</strong> can if <strong>you</strong> cannot comeon the date we give <strong>you</strong>;arrange with <strong>you</strong>r family or friends to take careof <strong>you</strong>r personal laundry, if possible.HELP US TO COMBAT INFECTIONtell <strong>us</strong> if <strong>you</strong> or any of <strong>you</strong>r family has haddiarrhoea or vomit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the 48 hours beforeadmission;tell a member of the ward team if <strong>you</strong>r ward,bathroom or equipment is unclean. Disc<strong>us</strong>s allconcerns with the matron;do not sit on other patients’ beds;rem<strong>in</strong>d staff if they appear not to havecleaned their hands before touch<strong>in</strong>g <strong>you</strong>;always wash <strong>you</strong>r own hands after <strong>us</strong><strong>in</strong>g thetoilet facilities and before eat<strong>in</strong>g;if <strong>you</strong> have a wound or a dra<strong>in</strong> or drip, try toavoid touch<strong>in</strong>g it. <strong>If</strong> a dress<strong>in</strong>g is loose or soiledtell one of the nurs<strong>in</strong>g staff;ask <strong>you</strong>r family and friends not to visit if theyare unwell. In particular, if they have haddiarrhoea or vomit<strong>in</strong>g they should not visituntil they have been well for 48 hours;rem<strong>in</strong>d visitors to also clean their hands beforeand after visit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>you</strong>, and not to sit on <strong>you</strong>rbed or any other bed.12


SMOKE-FREE AT THE RD&EPlease do not smoke anywhere <strong>in</strong> the build<strong>in</strong>gor <strong>in</strong> our courtyard gardens. The RD&E grounds,build<strong>in</strong>gs and car parks are totally smoke-free.We are very keen to help people <strong>in</strong> their effortsto stop smok<strong>in</strong>g. Why not <strong>call</strong> the NHS smok<strong>in</strong>gadvice service on 0845 111 1142 or see <strong>you</strong>r GPbefore com<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to hospital. The benefits beg<strong>in</strong>the m<strong>in</strong>ute <strong>you</strong> stop smok<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>If</strong> <strong>you</strong> <strong>need</strong> advicewhile <strong>in</strong> hospital, <strong>please</strong> talk to <strong>you</strong>r nurse. Pleasedo not embarrass our staff by ask<strong>in</strong>g them to take<strong>you</strong> outside to smoke.GIVE US YOUR FEEDBACKYour views about our services are important to <strong>us</strong>.We want <strong>you</strong> to feel as comfortable as possiblewith the treatment we give <strong>you</strong>. We welcomecomments that will help <strong>us</strong> improve services. Theycan help <strong>you</strong> sort out <strong>you</strong>r concerns and theycan guide <strong>you</strong> through the NHS services.The team can work with other organisations tohelp deal with <strong>you</strong>r concerns.13

Who <strong>you</strong> might seeYou will see many different members of staff onthe ward. <strong>If</strong> <strong>you</strong>’re not sure who they are <strong>please</strong>ask them. All staff should be wear<strong>in</strong>g namebadges. <strong>If</strong> <strong>you</strong> can’t see the badge, ask themto show it to <strong>you</strong>. Our staff will not be offended if<strong>you</strong> ask them to identify themselves.YOUR CONSULTANTThe doctor <strong>in</strong> charge of <strong>you</strong>r medical care is<strong>call</strong>ed the consultant. They will disc<strong>us</strong>s <strong>you</strong>rcondition with <strong>you</strong> and offer <strong>you</strong> the bestavailable treatment. They will have a team ofdoctors and nurses work<strong>in</strong>g with them and amember of <strong>this</strong> team will see <strong>you</strong> every day.<strong>If</strong> <strong>you</strong> want to know the name of <strong>you</strong>r consultant<strong>please</strong> ask a member of the ward team. We arehappy to be there with <strong>you</strong> when the consultantsees <strong>you</strong>.YOUR NURSEYou will have a nurse who is responsible for <strong>you</strong>rnurs<strong>in</strong>g care. They will also have help from theward team. <strong>If</strong> <strong>you</strong> want to know <strong>you</strong>r nurse’sname <strong>please</strong> ask any team member.MATRONThe matron manages the whole ward and issupported by the ward managers. Please askthem if <strong>you</strong> have concerns.SENIOR MATRONOur senior matrons are senior nurses and eachis <strong>in</strong> charge of a group of wards. Their job is toensure that <strong>you</strong> receive high-quality care andthat <strong>you</strong> are as comfortable as possible. Theycan help to solve a problem if the ward staffcan’t.16


HOUSEKEEPING STAFFOur ho<strong>us</strong>ekeep<strong>in</strong>g staff make sure <strong>you</strong>r ward isclean and that <strong>you</strong> get <strong>you</strong>r meals, dr<strong>in</strong>ks andrefreshments. <strong>If</strong> <strong>you</strong> have any worries aboutthese th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>please</strong> ask any member of theho<strong>us</strong>ekeep<strong>in</strong>g staff.STUDENTSThe RD&E is a teach<strong>in</strong>g hospital so studentdoctors might accompany <strong>you</strong>r doctor. And it can behard to talk about <strong>you</strong>r anxieties or fears withthe people <strong>you</strong> are closest to. We are keen tohelp by support<strong>in</strong>g the full range and variety ofspiritual and religio<strong>us</strong> <strong>need</strong>s of our patients, theircarers and staff.Our chapla<strong>in</strong>cy team consists of chapla<strong>in</strong>s fromthe ma<strong>in</strong> Christian denom<strong>in</strong>ations, supported bya team of tra<strong>in</strong>ed volunteers. Visitors, privacy & dignityYour visitors are very welcome dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>you</strong>r staywith <strong>us</strong> but <strong>please</strong> tell them not to visit if they areunwell. In particular, if they have had diarrhoeaor vomit<strong>in</strong>g they should not visit until they havebeen well for 48 hours. Please rem<strong>in</strong>d them toclean their hands prior to visit<strong>in</strong>g.Visit<strong>in</strong>g times are between 2.30pm and 8pmdaily <strong>in</strong> almost all wards, although IntensiveCare and the children’s wards operate a moreflexible system. Visit<strong>in</strong>g times helps <strong>us</strong> to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>a cleaner hospital and keep our wards quieterdur<strong>in</strong>g patients’ mealtimes (see page18). <strong>If</strong> theward’s visit<strong>in</strong>g arrangements don’t suit <strong>you</strong>r familyand friends <strong>please</strong> speak with a member of theward team about <strong>this</strong>.Please keep the number of visitors to two at atime so as not to disturb other patients.In certa<strong>in</strong> circumstances, we can arrange formembers of <strong>you</strong>r family to stay <strong>in</strong> the hospital.Please talk to a member of the ward team.Men and women are <strong>us</strong>ually cared forseparately. Sometimes there may be wards forboth sexes, but men and women will be caredfor <strong>in</strong> separate areas. However, men and womenmay be nursed together <strong>in</strong> areas like IntensiveCare where special facilities are <strong>need</strong>ed. <strong>If</strong> <strong>you</strong>have any concerns or questions about <strong>this</strong> <strong>please</strong>talk to a member of the ward team.<strong>If</strong> <strong>you</strong> wish to be cared for by a member ofstaff of the same sex as <strong>you</strong>, <strong>please</strong> talk to amember of the ward team. Leav<strong>in</strong>g hospitalWe will talk to <strong>you</strong> aboutarrang<strong>in</strong>g <strong>you</strong>r leav<strong>in</strong>g date.Please make sure <strong>you</strong> havesomeone to take <strong>you</strong> home,as we cannot normallyprovide transport. <strong>If</strong> <strong>this</strong> isdifficult, <strong>please</strong> talk to amember of the ward team.After the doctor says <strong>you</strong>can leave, the ward teamwill work hard to make sure<strong>this</strong> process goes assmoothly as possible.Sometimes we move apatient to a local community hospital for furthercare and treatment. <strong>If</strong> <strong>you</strong>r doctor advises <strong>this</strong> for<strong>you</strong> we will disc<strong>us</strong>s <strong>this</strong> with <strong>you</strong> and <strong>you</strong>r family.<strong>If</strong> we have to deal with lots of emergencies wesometimes ask patients to transfer earlier to acommunity hospital.
