Floristic analysis of the undisturbed forest(Flather et al. 1997; Howard et al. 1998; Van Jaarsvveld et al. 1998). Different groups ofresearchers have already shown interest. On a recent expedition, ornithologists discoveredthree birds that are not taxonomically determined at species level and might in fact be newspecies (Anteneh Shimelis, personal communication, February 2003). Similarly, someresearchers are planning to study the diversity of spiders in Yayu forest and their potentialsas biological insect control for the coffee plant (Negusu Aklilu, personal communication,February 2003).The information from this study can be used to compare Yayu forest with othersimilar forests in the future and develop a national conservation strategy for wild coffeepopulations and the associated rain forest areas. It provides some baseline information onthe vegetation and the status of wild coffee population. The knowledge of the abundanceand frequency of the plant species in the forest and their growth forms (tree, shrub, orclimber) can provide some indications on the importance of the species in the ecosystem.This information can support further research on the genetic diversity of the coffeepopulations, the economic and breeding values of the available genetic diversity, and themonitoring of changes in the floristic diversity of the forest vegetation. Monitoring changesis very important in biodiversity conservation and is strongly emphasized in the Conventionon Biological Diversity (UNCED 1992).The information in this study can also serve as a base for further research onspecies that can be useful for improving the livelihood of the local community, and asjustification for future research on the diversity of other taxa. Information on the abundanceand frequency will help to understand the biological importance of the species in theecosystem. Then, such questions will have to be answered like: Which of these species areuseful to improve the livelihood of the local community and for what purpose? How canthese be used without severely affecting the forest biodiversity? To answer such questions,further research on the reproductive biology, ecophysiological requirements, etc. of therespective species and on the management practices that could be applied for thesustainable use of these plants is necessary. The results of the current study show that Yayuforest is very important for the conservation of wild coffee populations and the diversity ofthe forest flora. From the status of the wild coffee population and floristic diversity, the65
Floristic analysis of the undisturbed forestforest has a good potential for a coffee gene reserve. Establishing a coffee gene reserve inYayu forest can foster the conservation of other plant species within the forest ecosystem,and hence coffee can be a flagship species.66
