This provides a flexibility of operation inlow alkaline waters, as well as the open ocean.When at sea the switch can be made to open loop using onlyseawater. The sulphur oxides in the exhaust react with the water toform sulphuric acid. Chemicals are not required since the naturalalkalinity of seawater neutralizes the acid.When required to switch to closed loop, for instance whilst enteringa port in a low alkalinity area, the natural alkalinity of seawater isboosted by an alkali which uses caustic soda (NaOH) as a buffer.89
