Health servicesHow to register with a Doctor (GP)Your local doctor is usually known as your GeneralPractitioner (GP). Everyone is entitled to the services of aGP for free. Your GP normally offers a range of servicesthat can include vaccinations, examination and treatments,prescriptions and medicines. Local doctors may also offer ababy clinic service. If you need more specialised treatmentyour doctor can refer you to your local hospital.It is easy to register with a GP and this guide lists all localdoctors’ surgeries. Once you have chosen a GP you canphone or visit them to register. You will be asked toprovide information identifying yourself, usually an officialletter with your name and address and your medical card.The receptionist will let you know if you can register or ifthere are not enough spaces they may recommend thatyou join another GP practice. You can use the NHSwebsite to locate your nearest GP or obtain a list of GPs inyour area on www.nhs.uk.If you do not have a medical card or if the information onyour medical card is incorrect, you can contact the PatientAdvice and Liaison Service (PALS) who can supply youwith one.
