IntroductionChurch StreetA lot of work is being done by many different people andgroups to improve the quality of life in the area for the11,962 people who live here. There are also opportunitiesfor you to get involved.The Church Street Neighbourhood ManagementProgramme is at the heart of the ward, based at theNeighbourhood Centre, on Church Street. The Programmehas been in place for nearly three years and is funded bycentral Government for four more years to tackle theissues that local people told them they wanted to seechanges to. These are:• crime and nuisance• the way the area looks, also known as the ‘physicalenvironment’• development of Church Street market and localbusinesses• upgrading skills and tackling worklessness• ensuring that the needs of local children and youngpeople are met• housing• improving health• ‘community cohesion’, creating a sense of communityspirit and neighbourliness3
