Is <strong>Regis</strong> unusual in providing <strong>iPads</strong> <strong>for</strong> its graduate students?A. Definitely. While other colleges are thinking about it, <strong>Regis</strong>, as the Metrowest Daily News put it onJuly 24, 2012, is “leading the way.” To our knowledge, no other college or university in the greaterBoston area is embarking on <strong>an</strong> <strong>initiative</strong> of this scale <strong>an</strong>d signific<strong>an</strong>ce.Q. How m<strong>an</strong>y <strong>iPads</strong> are involved in the <strong>iPads</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Grads</strong> <strong>initiative</strong>?A. About 1,000 <strong>iPads</strong>.Q. What are the specific adv<strong>an</strong>tages to using the iPad <strong>an</strong>d providing them to virtually everyone oncampus?A. One incredible benefit is the mobility, the ability to use <strong>an</strong>ywhere on campus. Unlike the traditionallaptop, the iPad is easily carried into class <strong>an</strong>d out into the field. We view it as a game ch<strong>an</strong>ger.Q. Which graduate students will get <strong>iPads</strong>?A. All full-time <strong>an</strong>d part-time matriculated (provisionally or fully accepted into a graduate program)graduate students will receive <strong>an</strong> iPad. A graduate student in <strong>an</strong>y program enrolled in 4 courses or <strong>for</strong>12 credits in a semester is considered full-time.Q. What about graduate students who are taking classes be<strong>for</strong>e they matriculate?A. These students c<strong>an</strong> ask <strong>for</strong> a lo<strong>an</strong>er iPad <strong>for</strong> the duration of their class. Students should contact theAssociate De<strong>an</strong> of Graduate Affairs, Dr. Claudia Pouravelis, to request a lo<strong>an</strong>er iPad.<strong>iPads</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Grads</strong> - Receiving Your iPadQ. When will graduate students receive their <strong>iPads</strong>?A. Matriculated graduate students will receive their <strong>iPads</strong> at the August <strong>an</strong>d J<strong>an</strong>uary Graduate StudentOrientations.Q. I already have <strong>an</strong> iPad. Will I be able to use that one?A. If you already have <strong>an</strong> iPad, you c<strong>an</strong> use it in addition to the one furnished through the <strong>iPads</strong> <strong>for</strong><strong>Grads</strong> program.Q. I am in my last semester of classes. Will I receive <strong>an</strong> iPad?A. Graduate students who are within 6 credits of completing their coursework as of the Fall 2013semester will not be required to receive <strong>an</strong> iPad. A lo<strong>an</strong>er iPad c<strong>an</strong> be made available to these students<strong>for</strong> use in their last courses. These students should contact the Associate De<strong>an</strong> of Graduate Affairs, Dr.Claudia Pouravelis, to request the use of a lo<strong>an</strong>er iPad.


Q. How does my <strong>Regis</strong> <strong>College</strong> iPad access the internet?A. The iPad provided by <strong>Regis</strong> <strong>College</strong> are Wi-Fi enabled only <strong>an</strong>d c<strong>an</strong>not access a data pl<strong>an</strong>. The entirecampus is now bl<strong>an</strong>keted by Wi-Fi access. For best collaboration in the classroom, use only the<strong>Regis</strong>Secure Wi-Fi network. To log in, use your <strong>Regis</strong>mail username <strong>an</strong>d password.Q. Will there be <strong>an</strong>y training <strong>for</strong> graduate students on how to use the iPad?A. Yes, Graduate students will receive technology training at the start of the semester <strong>an</strong>d may also visitthe ITS Helpdesk in <strong>College</strong> Hall CH131 with questions about the iPad. In<strong>for</strong>mation about these trainingsessions will be posted on the campus calendar <strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>nounced through <strong>Regis</strong> email. Plus, faculty willwork with the students based on the apps they are using.Q. What tech support is available if there are problems along the way?A. Students should take all questions about technology to the Helpdesk in <strong>College</strong> Hall CH131. You c<strong>an</strong>also reach the Helpdesk via phone at 781-768-7177 or by e-mail at helpdesk@regiscollege.edu<strong>iPads</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Grads</strong> – Using the iPad in classesQ. How do I connect to the internet on campus <strong>an</strong>d to other <strong>iPads</strong> in the classroom?A. Use ONLY the Wi-Fi connection called <strong>Regis</strong>Secure when you are on campus because connection toclassroom apps is only available when you are logged on to this Wi-Fi network. (The other Wi-Ficonnections listed on campus provide reduced access). To log on to <strong>Regis</strong>Secure, use your <strong>Regis</strong>mailusername <strong>an</strong>d password.Q. Are students obligated to bring <strong>iPads</strong> to classes? What if he or she doesn’t?A. Like other class materials, <strong>iPads</strong> should be brought to class regularly. Nothing derails a class as fast asstudents coming to class without the tools they need. Faculty members set policy on class requirements.Q. Will all textbooks be available electronically soon?A. No, not all textbooks are currently available electronically, though m<strong>an</strong>y students have already beenaccessing ebooks <strong>for</strong> years. Students should check course syllabi <strong>for</strong> details on course materials.Note: If your professor specifies a particular ebook reader, be sure to download that ereader app <strong>an</strong>dbuy books only from that app’s associated store (<strong>for</strong> example, Amazon store <strong>an</strong>d Kindle reader, oriBooks store <strong>an</strong>d iBooks reader). Each reader has its own set of features. You c<strong>an</strong>’t tr<strong>an</strong>sfer a book fromone reader to <strong>an</strong>other (<strong>for</strong> example from Kindle to iBooks). If you buy a book in the wrong app, you haveto buy the book again to read it in the correct app.


<strong>iPads</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Grads</strong> – Options <strong>an</strong>d alternatives to <strong>iPads</strong>Q. May graduate students opt out of using the iPad altogether?A. All matriculated graduate students are expected to participate in the <strong>iPads</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Grads</strong> <strong>initiative</strong> <strong>an</strong>dutilize iPad technology as part of their educational experience at <strong>Regis</strong> <strong>College</strong>. However, in certaincases, alternatives c<strong>an</strong> be arr<strong>an</strong>ged through the Office of Disability Services.Q. What if I need <strong>an</strong> academic accommodation or specialized apps?A. Graduate students who require <strong>an</strong>d are eligible <strong>for</strong> academic accommodation under the ADA mustregister with the Director of Student Disabilities directly.
