made in Taiwan and Hong Kong respectively. The number recorded in Chinamainland has doubled from 91 birds in previous census to a total of 187 birds in thiscensus. This is resulted by discovering two new important winter sites in Fujian andGuangdong. Details are referred to Table 1.All participants surveyed in total of 61 sites during the winter 2004-05 (Table 1and 2), of which the spoonbills were found in 40 sites. This is also the highestcoverage of this census so far (winter 2003-04: 54 sites, winter 2002-03: 25 sites, winter2001-02: 27 sites). More discussions of the numbers and trends of winteringBlack-faced Spoonbills in different places are made below.TaiwanA total of 757 individuals (51% of the known world population, Figure 2) wererecorded in Taiwan during this census. This is also a new high number in this area,indicated an increased of 20% from the figure of 632 birds in previous census (Table 3,Figure 3). The Chiku-Tsengwen Estuary area, including Sitsao, still holds the largestwintering population of this species in the world where 684 birds were counted.Another large flock of 57 birds were recorded at Pa-chang Estuary, Tainan, togetherwith other 11 birds at Ilan, four at Yunlin and one at Taitung.Pearl River Estuary (including Deep Bay in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, Taipa inMacao)Counting of spoonbills was conducted in a synchronous manner. A totalnumber of 350 Black-faced Spoonbills were recorded in this area during the census,of which 311 birds (21% of the known world population) were recorded in Deep Bayand the other 39 birds (2.6% of the known world population) were counted in Macao(Table 4, Figure 2). This is the new high number recorded in this area and it shows anincrease in 20% from the last year figure (i.e. 293 birds, Figure 3).In Deep Bay, birds were mobile between Mai Po Inner Deep Bay area andFutian during the census days. Their numbers showed a considerable fluctuation(Appendix 1). The highest number obtained in Hong Kong and Shenzhen was 288and 48 respectively, however, these did not appear on the same time. Survey area inboth Hong Kong and Shenzhen sides has good coverage, this includes the Mai PoInner Deep Bay Ramsar Site, fishponds at Lok Ma Chau to the intertidal area at PakNai, and also most of the areas in the Futian National Nature Reserve. This new highnumber is closed to an earlier maximum count of 324 birds at Mai Po in November2004 (W.H. Lee of AFCD in litt.), indicating that this synchronous count is aneffective method of counting the wintering spoonbills in this area.- 11 -

In contrast, 39 Black-faced Spoonbills were recorded at Taipa, Macao. Althoughthe numbers were apparently more stable over the whole census period, it is in factthe first sign of decline in the increasing trend of past five years. It may indicate thathabitat destruction and degradation from reclamations brought adverse impact tothe wintering spoonbills in this site. More concern should be made on this importantsite for this species.China Mainland and Hainan IslandEncouraging result was obtained from the Black-faced Spoonbill’s population inChina mainland. A new high number of total 187 birds were counted (Table 5) andtwo important wintering sites at Fuqing, Fujian province and Haifeng, Guangdongprovince were identified, where 52 (3.5% of the known world population) and 39(2.6% of the known world population) birds were recorded in these two placesrespectively during the census. The largest wintering flock of the spoonbill was stillrecorded in Hainan Island at the same site (i.e. Segang in Dongfang), where a total of68 birds were counted. Besides, small numbers were also present at ChongmingDongtan in Shanghai, Xiapu in Fujian and Lingao in Hainan.Unfortunately, Yenchang in Jiangsu province, a well-known regular winteringsite of this species, could not be covered during the census period. According toother reports of observation, a total of 21 birds were seen regularly in this winter. Webelieved the actual total number in China mainland could be even higher than thepresent figure. In addition to this, some areas are still largely under-surveyed, e.g.Zhejiang province where only one site at Wenzhou Bay was surveyed in this census.There has been record of spoonbills in this place during a satellite tracking study in1999 (Ueta et al. 2002). Guangxi province where no survey was conducted in thiscensus, but there has been record of seven birds at Hepu in 2004 census (Yu 2004).Red River Delta, VietnamSame as previous years, Xuan Thuy National Park holds the largest number ofthe spoonbills in this area and a total of 56 birds were recorded (Table 1, 2 and 6). Inthis census, the tide was high to favour the count of the spoonbills but this highnumber was still slightly lower than the peak number of 61 birds recorded inprevious winter. No apparent increasing trend of the wintering spoonbill is noted inthis site, while numbers in Tainan and Hong Kong has shown increased considerably(Figure 3). It reflects that habitat degradation suggested by Yu and Swennen (2001)made the general condition of the national park less favourable for the spoonbills.The increase of wintering spoonbills at Hainan might relate to the decrease ofnumbers in Xuan Thuy as well. Some birds may change from wintering at the RedRiver Delta to Hainan Island.- 12 -

JapanA total of 103 Black-faced Spoonbills were counted from western Japan andNansei-shoto Islands during the census period and additional 47 birds were recordedoutside the census period. The total number of these birds is very similar to thefigure of 149 birds in the 2004 census (Table 7), indicating that the winteringpopulation is relatively stable in recent two winters.Republic of KoreaTwenty-one Black-faced Spoonbills were recorded in Jeju Island in this census.This number falls again in the range of 14 to 29 birds since 1990s (Table 8) and thenumber of wintering Black-faced Spoonbills in this site is rather stable. This is thenorthern boundary of the known wintering range of this species.ThailandOnly one bird was seen during the census period and another bird was alsoseen later on 25 January in the Gulf of Thailand. These sightings together with thosein previous winters indicate that small number of the Black-faced Spoonbills mayvisit the Gulf of Thailand in winter in regular basis.The PhilippinesNo bird was seen in the census period in the Philippines. However, one of threebirds found at Palawan Island in previous winter still remained there over thesummer and also intermittently appeared till 25 January 2005. Unfortunately, thefishpond where the spoonbills were usually seen had been drained out by localgovernment on 4 February 2005 (Wild Bird Club, the Phillippines in litt.). In addition,a single bird was also seen at Batanes Islands on December 2004 and the previousrecord in the island was three birds in 2001. It used to be very few Black-facedSpoonbills recorded in the Philippines, the present records would be related to theblooming of the population in recent years.ConclusionIt is amazing that the number of the Black-faced Spoonbill could go over 1,400individuals just after passing the boundary of 1,200 birds in last year. The increasingrate could even reach to 20% and this trend is encouraging for safeguarding thisglobally endangered species. Although two new important wintering sites are foundalong the coast of China mainland and one in Hainan Island found last year, morebirds are still present at the traditional sites in Taiwan and Hong Kong thatconstitutes a total of 72% of the known global population. It reflects that the species- 13 -

is still facing considerable threats from habitat degradation and destruction, and anybird disease. 黑 臉 琵 鷺 全 球 同 步 普 查 :2005 年 1 月 21 至 23 日余 日 東香 港 觀 鳥 會 有 限 公 司( 認 可 公 共 性 質 慈 善 機 構 )撮 要黑 臉 琵 鷺 全 球 同 步 普 查 於 2005 年 1 月 21 至 23 日 進 行 。 有 關 普 查 共 錄 得 1,475隻 全 球 瀕 危 黑 臉 琵 鷺 , 另 外 有 79 隻 在 接 近 普 查 期 間 錄 得 。 這 數 字 顯 示 黑 臉 琵 鷺較 2004 年 的 1,206 隻 有 至 少 22% 增 幅 , 這 越 冬 種 群 增 加 趨 勢 , 反 映 這 鳥 種 正 由從 前 的 低 數 字 逐 漸 恢 復 。引 言黑 臉 琵 鷺 Platelea minor 棲 息 於 東 亞 沿 海 地 區 (Hancock et al. 1992, del Hoyo et al.1992, Yu and Swennen 2004)。1990 年 代 初 , 黑 臉 琵 鷺 的 全 球 已 知 數 量 只 有 數 百隻 (Kennerley 1990, Dahmer and Felley 2000), 因 而 列 入 全 球 受 脅 鳥 種 名 單(Collar et al. 1994, Baillie and Groombridge 1996, BirdLife International 2000),在 保 育 方 面 受 到 廣 泛 關 注 。 黑 臉 琵 鷺 的 種 群 在 2003 年 1 月 上 升 至 超 過 1,000 隻 (Yu2003), 並 於 2004 年 超 過 1,200 隻 (Yu 2004)。 可 是 , 大 部 份 越 冬 琵 鷺 種 群 集 中 於數 個 地 點 , 這 使 牠 們 受 到 的 威 脅 包 括 生 態 環 境 質 素 下 降 和 破 壞 、 感 染 疾 病 等 機 會隨 之 增 加 。自 從 1993 年 開 始 , 每 年 都 有 進 行 全 球 同 步 普 查 , 以 評 估 黑 臉 琵 鷺 的 越 冬 種 群 狀況 。 這 項 普 查 並 被 劉 小 如 等 (1995) 列 入 為 優 先 保 育 次 序 。 現 時 這 項 調 查 已 證 實 為有 效 和 實 用 的 工 具 , 提 供 越 冬 黑 臉 琵 鷺 數 量 和 分 佈 資 料 。 國 際 鳥 盟 支 會 香 港 觀 鳥會 於 2003 年 起 開 始 統 籌 全 球 同 步 普 查 。 這 個 報 告 包 含 了 2005 年 1 月 21 至 23日 期 間 , 在 多 個 越 冬 地 點 進 行 的 隆 冬 普 查 結 果 。普 查 方 法普 查 於 2005 年 1 月 21,22 及 23 日 進 行 。 日 期 選 擇 於 1 月 中 或 後 旬 的 原 因 是 琵 鷺 數 量於 冬 季 中 期 較 為 穩 定 。 地 圖 1 顯 示 全 球 同 步 普 查 的 進 行 地 點 。 選 擇 這 些 地 點 的 原因 是 它 們 過 去 有 黑 臉 琵 鷺 的 紀 錄 。 在 普 查 之 前 , 本 會 向 各 參 與 者 提 供 普 查 指 引 作為 技 術 基 礎 。 普 查 以 同 步 方 式 , 利 用 雙 筒 和 單 筒 望 遠 鏡 進 行 。 這 報 告 也 包 括 一 些普 查 期 間 外 的 數 算 。- 18 -

琵 鷺 普 查 有 賴 各 地 資 深 觀 鳥 者 、 研 究 員 和 鳥 類 學 家 共 同 義 務 合 作 。 香 港 、 澳 門 、台 灣 、 越 南 和 日 本 的 普 查 結 果 由 當 地 的 統 籌 員 收 集 和 整 理 。 南 韓 、 中 國 大 陸 包 括海 南 島 、 菲 律 賓 和 泰 國 方 面 , 則 由 個 別 人 士 提 交 紀 錄 。有 些 地 區 距 離 咫 尺 , 例 如 香 港 米 埔 、 深 圳 福 田 和 澳 門 路 環 , 都 是 位 於 華 南 珠 江 河口 地 區 , 琵 鷺 可 於 一 天 內 飛 達 這 幾 個 地 點 。 因 此 , 所 以 這 些 地 點 的 數 算 工 作 有 需要 同 步 進 行 。結 果 及 討 論綜 觀普 查 期 間 共 錄 得 1,475 隻 黑 臉 琵 鷺 , 這 是 新 高 數 字 ( 表 1), 亦 較 2004 年 進 行 的調 查 增 加 了 22%, 有 關 升 幅 亦 較 以 往 為 多 (2004 年 :13%;2003 年 :9.3%)。隨 著 全 球 同 步 普 查 展 開 , 除 了 1996-97 和 1997-98 年 外 , 有 關 數 量 趨 勢 每 年 陸 續上 升 ( 圖 1)。黑 臉 琵 鷺 的 實 際 種 群 可 能 高 於 上 述 數 字 , 原 因 是 有 另 外 79 隻 琵 鷺 在 普 查 期 間 外錄 得 , 但 這 不 能 排 除 琵 鷺 會 在 這 些 地 區 來 回 飛 行 的 可 能 性 。 琵 鷺 數 字 的 升 幅 , 主要 是 在 牠 們 的 主 要 越 冬 地 , 有 更 多 數 量 聚 集 , 這 些 地 區 包 括 台 灣 台 南 、 香 港 后 海灣 、 以 及 中 國 大 陸 。 台 灣 和 香 港 的 黑 臉 琵 鷺 數 量 分 別 曾 加 了 125 隻 和 73 隻 。 中國 大 陸 方 面 , 則 由 去 年 錄 得 的 91 隻 上 升 至 今 年 的 187 隻 , 升 幅 達 兩 倍 。 其 中 原因 是 發 現 了 兩 個 重 要 的 越 冬 地 , 位 於 福 建 和 廣 東 , 詳 見 表 1。參 與 是 次 黑 臉 琵 鷺 全 球 同 步 普 查 的 人 員 共 考 察 了 61 個 調 查 地 點 ( 表 1 和 表 2),其 中 40 個 有 黑 臉 琵 鷺 紀 錄 。 調 查 的 覆 蓋 範 圍 亦 較 以 往 高 (2003-04 年 冬 :54 個 ,2002-03 年 冬 :25 個 ;2001-02 年 冬 :27 個 )。 以 下 是 關 於 各 地 黑 臉 琵 鷺 越 冬 地數 量 及 趨 勢 的 討 論 。台 灣台 灣 共 錄 得 757 隻 琵 鷺 ( 佔 全 球 已 知 總 數 的 51%, 見 圖 2), 這 個 是 新 高 數 量 ,較 上 屆 普 查 的 632 隻 上 升 了 20%( 圖 3, 表 3)。 其 中 七 股 和 曾 文 溪 口 一 帶 , 包 括四 草 , 錄 得 684 隻 琵 鷺 , 是 全 球 最 多 越 冬 琵 鷺 的 地 方 。 其 他 地 區 包 括 台 南 八 掌 溪口 錄 得 57 隻 , 宜 蘭 4 隻 以 及 台 東 1 隻 。珠 江 河 口 ( 包 括 香 港 和 深 圳 的 后 海 灣 , 以 及 澳 門 路 環 )普 查 以 同 步 方 式 進 行 , 共 錄 得 350 隻 琵 鷺 。 其 中 311 隻 ( 全 球 已 知 種 群 21%) 在- 19 -

后 海 灣 錄 得 、39 隻 ( 全 球 已 知 種 群 2.6%) 在 澳 門 錄 得 。 這 是 琵 鷺 在 這 地 區 的 新高 數 字 , 較 去 年 增 加 了 20%( 去 年 293 隻 , 見 圖 3)。普 查 進 行 期 間 , 琵 鷺 會 來 回 飛 行 米 埔 內 后 海 灣 和 福 田 範 圍 , 而 調 查 結 果 亦 反 映 出有 關 的 數 字 波 動 ( 附 錄 1)。 香 港 和 深 圳 錄 得 最 高 的 琵 鷺 數 字 分 別 為 288 隻 和 48隻 , 不 過 這 都 不 是 在 同 一 時 間 記 錄 。 香 港 和 深 圳 兩 地 的 普 查 覆 蓋 範 圍 相 當 高 , 包括 米 埔 內 后 海 灣 國 際 重 要 濕 地 、 落 馬 洲 魚 塘 區 、 白 泥 潮 澗 帶 、 以 及 福 田 國 家 級 自然 保 護 區 。 有 關 最 高 數 字 接 近 2004 年 11 月 期 間 報 告 的 324 隻 ( 漁 農 自 然 護 理 署利 偉 雄 書 信 記 載 ), 這 亦 證 實 了 在 這 地 區 進 行 的 同 步 普 查 , 是 一 個 有 效 的 數 算 方法 。相 反 , 普 查 期 間 在 澳 門 路 環 錄 得 39 隻 琵 鷺 , 這 數 字 明 顯 較 為 穩 定 。 不 過 以 往 5年 連 續 上 升 趨 勢 中 , 今 年 郤 現 下 跌 跡 象 , 這 可 能 是 填 海 工 程 導 致 生 境 破 壞 和 環 境質 素 下 降 , 影 響 該 區 的 越 冬 琵 鷺 。中 國 大 陸 和 海 南 島今 年 在 中 國 大 陸 錄 得 的 琵 鷺 種 群 數 字 令 人 鼓 舞 : 共 錄 得 187 隻 琵 鷺 , 以 及 新 發 現廣 東 省 海 豐 和 福 建 省 福 清 兩 個 重 要 的 越 冬 地 點 。 這 兩 個 地 方 分 別 錄 得 52 隻 ( 全球 已 知 種 群 3.5%) 和 39 隻 ( 全 球 已 知 種 群 2.6%) 琵 鷺 。 錄 得 琵 鷺 最 多 的 地 方是 海 南 島 , 在 同 一 地 方 ( 東 方 四 更 ) 錄 得 68 隻 琵 鷺 。 此 外 上 海 崇 明 島 東 灘 、 福建 霞 蒲 以 及 海 南 臨 高 亦 錄 得 有 小 量 琵 鷺 。可 是 , 江 蘇 省 鹽 城 這 個 經 常 錄 得 琵 鷺 的 地 方 , 普 查 期 間 郤 沒 有 琵 鷺 數 算 工 作 進行 。 不 過 根 據 其 他 報 告 , 這 地 今 年 冬 天 共 錄 得 21 隻 琵 鷺 , 我 們 相 信 實 際 數 量 多於 這 個 報 告 數 字 。 此 外 , 有 些 地 方 仍 未 有 足 夠 數 算 人 手 , 例 如 浙 江 省 只 有 溫 洲 灣有 進 行 普 查 , 這 地 是 1999 年 在 一 項 人 造 衛 星 追 蹤 研 究 中 , 發 現 有 越 冬 琵 鷺 的 地方 。 今 年 廣 西 沒 有 參 與 數 算 工 作 , 根 據 記 錄 2004 年 (Yu 2004) 曾 於 合 浦 錄 得 7 隻琵 鷺 。越 南 紅 河 口一 如 以 往 , 春 水 國 家 公 園 是 越 南 最 大 的 黑 臉 琵 鷺 越 冬 地 , 共 錄 得 56 隻 琵 鷺 ( 表1, 表 2 及 表 6)。 今 年 的 潮 汐 高 度 理 想 , 使 數 算 工 作 順 利 進 行 , 不 過 所 得 結 果 仍較 去 年 最 高 的 61 隻 略 低 。 與 台 南 和 香 港 的 升 幅 比 較 , 這 地 的 琵 鷺 數 字 未 有 明 顯上 升 趨 勢 ( 圖 3),Yu and Swennen (2001) 指 出 生 境 質 素 下 降 , 使 該 國 公 園 整體 狀 況 的 未 能 像 以 往 一 樣 , 提 供 適 合 琵 鷺 棲 息 的 環 境 。 海 南 島 的 琵 鷺 數 字 上 升 ,相 信 與 春 水 數 字 下 降 有 關 , 部 份 紅 河 口 的 琵 鷺 會 選 擇 在 海 南 島 越 冬 。- 20 -

日 本日 本 西 面 和 西 南 群 島 共 錄 得 103 隻 琵 鷺 , 有 另 外 47 隻 是 在 普 查 期 間 以 外 錄 得 。琵 鷺 總 數 與 2004 年 的 149 隻 相 當 接 近 ( 表 7), 這 指 出 過 去 兩 年 的 越 冬 琵 鷺 種 群較 穩 定 。韓 國是 次 普 查 在 濟 州 島 錄 得 21 隻 琵 鷺 , 從 九 十 年 代 起 , 黑 臉 琵 鷺 的 數 字 介 乎 14 至29 隻 ( 表 8) 之 間 , 今 年 也 不 例 外 , 而 且 數 目 亦 算 穩 定 。 這 是 已 知 這 鳥 種 最 北 面 的越 冬 地 。泰 國普 查 期 間 在 泰 國 只 有 一 隻 琵 鷺 紀 錄 , 該 鳥 在 1 月 25 日 之 後 在 泰 國 灣 錄 得 。 過 去幾 個 冬 季 有 都 黑 臉 琵 鷺 的 紀 錄 , 我 們 相 信 泰 國 灣 每 年 冬 天 都 會 有 少 量 琵 鷺 越 冬 。菲 律 賓今 年 沒 有 琵 鷺 在 普 查 期 間 錄 得 。 去 年 冬 天 在 巴 拉 望 島 有 3 隻 琵 鷺 , 其 中 一 隻 在 夏天 留 下 至 今 年 1 月 25 日 。2005 年 2 月 4 日 , 當 地 政 府 放 了 魚 塘 的 水 , 這 個 魚塘 是 琵 鷺 常 出 沒 的 地 方 ( 菲 律 賓 Wild Bird Club 書 信 記 載 )。 此 外 ,2004 年 12 月在 Batanes 島 錄 得 1 隻 琵 鷺 , 這 地 曾 於 2001 年 錄 得 3 隻 。 菲 律 賓 過 去 很 少 機 會錄 得 琵 鷺 , 近 年 的 記 錄 顯 示 與 琵 鷺 數 量 增 長 有 關 。總 結今 年 琵 鷺 的 數 字 能 突 破 1,400 隻 , 多 於 去 年 1,200 邊 緣 , 確 實 令 人 感 到 意 外 。 有關 增 長 率 超 越 20%, 無 疑 為 保 育 這 重 全 球 性 瀕 危 鳥 類 , 帶 來 鼓 舞 的 訊 息 。 雖 然 今年 在 中 國 大 陸 沿 海 地 區 發 現 了 兩 個 新 的 越 冬 地 , 而 去 年 在 海 南 島 發 現 一 個 , 不 過大 部 份 琵 鷺 仍 逗 留 在 台 灣 和 香 港 越 冬 , 佔 已 知 數 量 72%。 因 此 , 琵 鷺 種 群 仍 然 面對 很 大 的 威 脅 , 例 如 如 生 境 質 素 下 降 和 破 壞 , 以 及 疾 病 等 。 此 外 , 琵 鷺 的 繁 殖 地亦 不 能 忽 視 , 這 對 拯 救 牠 們 遠 離 絕 種 危 機 是 十 分 重 要 的 。鳴 謝是 次 普 查 能 順 利 完 成 , 全 賴 各 熱 心 普 查 員 協 力 收 集 資 料 。 我 要 感 謝 以 下 各 人 : 韓國 ) Choi Chang-yang, Kang Chang-wan, Kim Eun-mi; ( 日 本 ) Shiori Asai, 陳 承 彥 ,Reiko Fukushima, Kinuko Hakota, Takami Hakota, Saori Hamasuna, MasatakaHanada, Hashimoto-san, Takuro Hattori, Osamu Hayashi, Kenzaburoh Inoue,- 21 -
