Winter 2001Volume 10, Issue 3Schoeps Colette Microphone SystemSchoeps Colette microphones are known fortheir accurate, neutral sound as well as offeringa complete modular system that provides toolsfor almost any application you can think of. Themodular approach is favored by feature filmsound mixers, location recordists and studiosworldwide. The Colette Series encompasses a variety ofpowering options, 20 different capsules and acomplete range of active, passive and miniatureaccessories that make microphone placementand pattern selection a pleasure not a chore.A Schoeps microphone consists of a CMCamplifierand a MK- capsule. Accessories canthen be added to customize the system. TheCMC amplifier is a Class A, transfomerlessdesign. You can choose between the CMC6“universal” 12V-48V phantom, CMC5 48V phantom,CMC4 12V T parallel powering or theCMC3 12V phantom. These amplifiers sharehigh output and very low source impedence. This means that they can drive very long cableruns without risking signal loss or hum from RFpickup. There is even a battery powered versionthe CMBI, and a great tube design the M222.Talk about choices!Among the twenty different capsules are twovariable pattern and two boundary layer types. The clear choice for traditional film and videooverhead mic placement is the MK 41 supercardioidcapsule. It combines high directivitywith an exceptionally smooth off-axis response. When used as a spot mic for music recording,vocals/V.O.s or in an M-S stereo setup, the MK41 once again offers excellent performance.Anyone who has experience with an MK 41 forproduction sound dialog knows what thesemics can do. Head turns and two-shots soundnatural. The linear off-axis response helps tomake your tracks sound good and reduceheadaches for editorial and post production. Also of interest for production sound are theMK 4 cardioid, the MK 5 cardioid-omni and theMK 21 wide cardioid capsules. These all havea broader pickup pattern than the MK 41, andoffer solutions for special applications. The MK8 figure-of-eight capsule also has some uniquecharacteristics, it is a single diaphragm designthat yields directional pickup nearly independentof frequency. This is the obvious choicefor the Side channel of a Mid-Side pair. Alsoconsider the BLM 03C, a miniature boundarylayer disc with a five meter cable. With a diameterof only 80 mm, (a little better than threeinches) the BLM 03C is perfect for unobtrusivemic placement on process trailer car rigs andfor round table discussions.
