San Diego Woodturners Page 8 January 2012Gallery 21 Wrap-upI am writing this on Christmas Day as we wrapped up Gallery 21 for this year yesterday afternoon. Thedetailed accounting has not been completed yet by any means as we have to wait for Studio 38 to process allthe credit card slips. However, we had a pretty good year considering the economy. In 2010 with a full fourweeks, we grossed approximately $5,100. By my initial reckoning for this year, I think we will have grossedabout $4,200 in 24 days. The gross amount includes the total amount of sales before subtracting taxes andpayments to Spanish Village, Studio 38, and out Club. I hope to have the final figures and checks, if possible,at our January meeting. While we did sell some higher priced items this year (Jim Berger sold two of his magnificent decorated vases)the vast majority of items sold were in the $20-$60 category. Bottle stoppers were especially big as weresmaller bowls people could feel good about giving as gifts that did not “break the bank.” Every year has beendifferent but it certainly seemed that the “mid-priced” items were more successful this year.Truthfully, I was somewhat disappointed that we had so few members display their work at Gallery 21. Ibelieve the last figure I saw from Leonard Badour, our Membership Chair, was 189 members of our Club.We only had work from 28 people being displayed this year. While I think we did a good job of filling up theGallery, we did so by accepting extra pieces from those woodturners who choose to participate. Going forward,I would encourage every member to consider displaying at least a few items as the primary purposes ofoperating Gallery 21 are both to provide an opportunity for members to determine if there is an interest in ourwork for a price as well as to encourage others in the community to consider joining both our Club and ourmutual enjoyment of woodturning.I think it is worth noting that many members displaying for the first time made some meaningful sales indicatingthat it is not necessarily just the “old and established” turners who sell items. Actually, many of us whohave been displaying at Gallery 21 for years sold nothing this year. 20 artists had sales this year.I sincerely appreciate the excellent assistance I received from Club members in setting up the Gallery andoperating it every day. By the time this goes to press, we will have long since closed out the Gallery and putaway the display cases. I hope everyone who worked a day or so at the Gallery enjoyed the opportunity todevelop a better feel for what the community at large thinks about woodturning as well as what interests them.Scotty

San Diego Woodturners Page 10 January 2012Coming In February - Al StirtAl Stirt is one of the pioneers of woodturning as an art form. He makes a “simple” bowl into something exceptionalby paying careful attention to the orientation of the grain and the form. He carves wonderful patternsinto platters and bowls and often uses milk paint to accent the patterns. In Al’s words:“I consider myself a “bowl maker” more than a wood turner because, although the turning process fascinatesme, it is the resulting bowl that commands my interest. From the earliest times bowls have had meanings forpeople beyond the purely utilitarian. The bowl as vessel has a resonance deep within the human psyche. I havealways thought of each piece that I make as a composition utilizing elements of pattern, line, weight, textureand form. Even in the most simple pieces I try to find a harmony of grain and shape. I seek a balance in mywork between the dynamic and the serene. By playing with the tension created by combining the circle’s perfectionwith the energy of pattern I am trying to make pieces that have life. I use patterns, whether created bygrain structure or organic fluting & carving or repeated geometric shapes, to develop harmony in each of mypieces. I find myself always looking for a new means of expression within the turned form.”Here are some photos of Al’s work. Al will do the February club demo on February 18 and hands on classeson February 16/17 and 19/20. As you can see from the photos Al is especially skilled at combining great formwith decorative elements. I was fortunate to take a workshop from Al. He is an exceptional instructor and atruly nice guy!

San Diego Woodturners Page 11 January 2012About Our Members:Pete CampbellIn November, we were treated to yet another great demonstration by one of our Club’s best turners, PeteCampbell. While I was enjoying his demonstration and, in particular, his observations about his approach toturning and learning new techniques, I reflected upon Pete’s impact on me and the Club. Although I seem torecall that he said he had only been turning for some ten years, I am sure he was in the Club when I joinedin the late 1990’s because I think he has always been there encouraging new turners to extend their comfortzone and explore more complex and different projects. At one of the first Mini-Symposiums I ever attended, which was held at Ernest Grabbe’s warehouse site, Iremember clearly Pete Campbell earnestly chiding some reluctant novices (myself included) to try more anddifferent projects. Pete has consistently insisted that there is no shame in failure! That is a tenet that all newturners must accept if they are going to move ahead. Pete backs up his chiding by always offering to help, tutoror assist in any way possible. Another “trick” Pete often uses is offering a “reluctant” turner a nice pieceof wood and challenging them to bring it back the next month made into something – anything – so long asthe person has tried to move forward in his or her skills.Another aspect of Pete’s contributions to our Club is his extensive imagination as to what can be done withany one piece of wood. His “fire pots” developed in response to the terrible wild fires are just one example ofhis creative process. Again, he challenges us to expand our minds and try new tools, processes and finishes.I know his efforts have resulted in many turners finding exciting new projects and, more importantly, improvedconfidence and enthusiasm for further expansion of their talents.I, for one, sincerely appreciate all that Pete has given our Club. Many have visited his “shop” in Temeculaand been impressed with his devotion to woodturning. He impresses with some of the huge items he turns. Many of us don’t even have the facilities to lift, much less turn such large pieces of wood. Pete further demonstratesan enthusiasm for making a special tool if a task seems to require a tool not yet sold or available. In all these ways, we have benefited from Pete Campbell’s generous enthusiasm.I believe Pete is a major asset to our Club members and the Club itself. I encourage you to reach out to Petethis next year and accept one or more of his heartfelt challenges.Scotty

San Diego Woodturners Page 14 January 2012I thought it might be of interestto some of you (and the beggingof Phil for articles every month)I thought I would write an articleeach month of the building ofmy new shop. It should be readyway before the next Take-A-Turn and ready to be christenedby numerous turners both oldand new.Since the untimely passing ofmy mother, the building of anew shop on our property hasbeen brought to the forefront. The shop that many of you havebeen to on her property was builtabout 9 years ago by mostlymy husband Maury and I, alongwith a contractor friend and acouple of sub-contractors. It wasa Dixieline Garage Kit and stoodat 24 X 10 feet.Shop Evolution: Karen’s New Shopthan 1000 square feet to be ableto build it 10 feet from our sideyear. So my latest Dixieline kitwill be 30 X 33 making it exactly990 feet. It’s going to stand near the rearof our property and towards theside. We have already been tothe Architects twice to makechanges and Department ofPlanning and Land Use (DPLUwith the County of San Diego)three times and I’m sure therewill be more before this is alldone.wall space.by Karen FreitasI have already talked to DanLeaf about getting one of hislarge Home Depot style shelfracks to hold more wood (like Idon’t have enough now) withoutdrooping in the middle like Ihave now. I am trying to figureout how I can add an area to dofinishing which will vent outside.I may either do a portableone or build it near one of thewindows in the back. Before buying our house about5 years ago, we checked withthe county to make sure a shopwould fit where we wanted toput it and there wouldn’t be toomuch trouble obtaining all thewonderful permits you have toget to build it legally. We discoveredwe had to keep it lessThe plan as it sits now, is to havea small (they only allow 4 ½ by4 ½ foot) bathroom in this onetoo. The last time it wasn’t asstrict on the exact size but thecounty does not want anyonetrying to change it over into livingspace. (Like I could changeit later anyways!) I will haveone entire wall with no windowsor doors so there will be plentyof cabinet and count top space. There will be 2 windows onthe back wall near the lathe andalthough it showed as a 3 cargarage I only wanted the 2 cargarage door to allow for moreSo far, we have had our neighborwho runs an excavating andhauling business complete thepad by digging down two feetand taking out all of the rocks, roots and then return the dirt allpacked down. He will be diggingthe footing for the foundationnext. That will be right after(Continued on page 15)

San Diego Woodturners Page 15 January 2012(Shop- continued from page 14)we get all the permits signed offby the county. Then our contractorfriend will be back to set theforms for the raised stem wall. Then comes the cement contractorsto lay out the floor.I do have one request from everyone. If you have experiencewith putting in a whole shopvacuum system please get a holdof me. I want to incorporate itinto my shop and I’m sure therewill be some stuff that has togo through the foundation. I’vemade several changes with electriclocations with the experienceI’ve had with my current shopbut I never got around to settingup a vacuum or air compressorhoses throughout the shop. Those will be in this new one.It will be interesting to see howthings go next month -January2012. Until then, keep on turningand be safe. One of Our Own:Some startling news, but all people are ok.Thursday night (December 15th), the Duff’s woke up to fireoutside their bedroom in Russ’s woodturning (Russ & Eloise -ed) area. Earlier in the evening while on his lathe, Russ spotteda spark and stomped it, thinking it was out. At 11:30 pm Russand Eloise woke up, alerted to three foot flames visible throughthe sliding glass door. They bolted out of bed, called 911, andthen got their cars out of the garage. The fire department responded with 7 trucks and a helicopter tocontain the fire and successfully kept it from spreading to anyother Mount La Jolla unit. However, the entire back of the Duffhouse is destroyed. The front of the house is intact but sufferedsevere smoke and water damage. Their computers and recordswere saved, fortunately. Also, Eloise’s drawings and Russ’sturnings are smokey, but repairable. They are safe and living with a brother who is close by. Eloise’sdaughter is on her way back and Russ’s son Eric, who liveshere, is a resource. They have plenty of help to house and clotheand feed them at the moment. If you would like to email, that is great. Cards can be sent to theaddress below. They are so busy that they can’t take calls rightnow, but are grateful for emotional support. As you’d expect, they are bearing up with aplomb, but this is a major setback. They will let us know what help they need as they sort things out.We will keep you posted.-Judy and OskarEmails:eloiseduff@earthlink.net, rduff@earthlink.net,Temporary Address:6363 Cardeno DriveLa Jolla, CA 92037

San Diego Woodturners Page 16 January 2012New Tablesaw Rules on HorizonTools & Power EquipmentCPSC moves to toughen safetystandards for table sawsAfter nearly a decade of discussion, the Consumer ProductSafety Commission is takingsteps to regulate table saws inan effort to prevent the tens ofthousands of injuries, includingfinger amputations, that occureach year. “The injuries resultingfrom the use of table sawsare, in many cases, particularlygruesome,” said Chairman InezTenenbaum in a WashingtonPost report. On Wednesday, the commissionvoted 5-0 to begin lookingat ways to reduce injuries fromsaws, which they say cost anaverage of $35,000 per injury—morethan $2 billion eachyear—including medical expensesand lost time from work.In their quest, they will look atnew safety devices including theSawStop flesh-sensing technologydeveloped by an amateurwoodworker.“Since 2003, the federal governmenthas known that SawStop’sflesh-sensing technologyseems to virtuallyeliminate the amputationsand severelacerations thatresult from contactwith a blade saw,”said CommissionerRobert Adler in astatement. “Over theyears, no one hasstepped forward to challenge theefficacy of this technology.”Adler added that he hopes theindustry looks at SawStop aswell as competing technologies, noting that the “CPSC writesproduct safety standards, we donot mandate a particular technology. We write performancestandards and leave it to manufacturersto decide how to meetthem.”In the past the Power Tool Institute,an industry organizationthat represents manufacturers, has argued that the SawStoptechnology is too expensive—especially for lower-priced sawsused by millions of home woodworkersand do-it-yourselfers.The industry has also argued thatthe technology is not foolproofand is difficult to include intable saws because of extensivepatents.Still, Tenenbaum is intent onpreventing the 10 finger amputationsthat occur each day. TheCPSC will take comments fromindustry and consumers overthe next 60 days and then beginto develop and propose safetyregulations. “Comments fromthe public inform and enlightenus as to whether moving forwardwith this mandatory rulemakingis necessary and, if so, exactlywhat direction it should take,”said Adler.Editor’s Note:These discussions and subsequentregulations will have aprofound impact on the woodworkingindustry and woodworker’severywhere. This is a topic sure to follow inthe coming months.-Phil

San Diego Woodturners Page 17 January 2012Safety in Woodturningby Sally AultSafety in the shop is something we often talk about but too often do not really make a priority. This year the woodturning community had a wake up call with the tragic death of woodturner Joan Kelly.Joan was killed when an unstable piece of wood she was turning at too high a speed came apart and hit her inthe head. There isn’t a piece of wood or a project in the world that is worth your life. Here are a few of the basics that you really need to keep in mind every time you are in your shop.1. Always use a face shield when roughing out a piece of wood.2. Start your lathe on slow speed and do not turn it up until you are sure that the wood is stable, then turn it upslowly.3. Always stand to the side when you turn on your lathe until you are sure everything is stable.4. Don’t switch from your face shield to safety glasses until the wood has been rounded.5. Sharpen your tools. A sharp tool will make turning safer.6. When you are turning dry wood or sanding you must protect your lungs. At the very least, use a dustmask…better still use a respirator. The fine dust can permanently damage your lungs.7. After Russ Duff’s tragic fire (thank God both Duff’s are OK), we should all paty attention to making sure itdoesn’t happen to anyone else.a. Keep all oily rags in a fire-safe lidded container or let them dry flat…outside and away from anythingflammable.b. Keep shavings out of your lights…blow them out daily.c. If a fire starts and you put it out…never assume it is really out. Sweep the entire shop and wet downall the shavings you remove.A few additional safety requirements when you are in a turning class::1. Always angle your lathe so that if a piece flies off it will not be aimed at another student.2. When walking behind someone who is turning, wait until they have finished their cut so you don’t startlethem and cause a catch.3. Don’t use unstable wood…especially when others are in the same room..4. LISTEN to the instructor. If you are told to stop doing something…STOP! Ask why later.5. Do not use home made tools without permission from the instructor.6. Do not use the band saw without permission from the instructor. Please stay safe in your shop. If you follow basic safely procedures and don’t take unnecessary risks yourturning hobby will be one that will continue for a long time.

San Diego Woodturners Page 18 Jamiary 2012Structured Cellulose Communications(aka - Wood News)I have been in Allen Driver’s shoes for about two months. So far I have been to Point Loma twice and Vistaonce for wood. Myoporum and carob have been added to our wood collection at Bent Street. Both types ofwood turn well and are available to you.As you probably know wood is on sale and available to you the hour before our meetings and a half hour followingour meetings. At $.25/lb you can’t go wrong.A special thank you to Roy Ulrich and Mike Ross. Roy and Mike helped to bring in a couple of loads ofwood, seal the wood, and organize wood in the trailer. We actually have quite a bit of wood available for you.If you want to get involved from time to time with cutting, hauling, and/or organizing the wood we have onsite please give me a call, Dan: 619-403-0377. In January, I will be circulating a sign up sheet at our monthlymeeting. Also, as members of the San Diego Wood Turners you might come across an opportunity for us to add to ourwood inventory. If you hear of anyone needing to move wood off their property give me a call. Sally Aultgave me such a call a couple of weeks ago and we now have nearly two truck loads of wood. Thank youSally! We do need to be a little selective so that we continue to offer club members a variety of wood. You might wonder about our guidelines to acquiring wood.“Access” to the wood is important, also we do not chip or haul away branches, etc.)“Wood” needs to be fallen and of manageable dimensions so that 2-4 individuals might cut, move, load, and haul the wood away“Property lines and power lines” are respected“Safety” is paramount and every effort is made to keep our volunteers safe“Building relationships” and having a good time with other turners is importantIf you have any one gallon orange juice or other such containersplease rinse them out and bring them to the meeting. I will beordering material to seal the wood. Some of this sealant will bemade available for purchase to club members. And yes, it willbe sold in one gallon containers!Suggestions are welcome!!!Dan White: 619-403-0377

San Diego Woodturners Page 25 January 2012What do YOU do? (Besides turning that is....)Do business with a fellow SDWT memberSDWT is made up of members with a vast variety of talents.Rather than flail around looking for someone to do business with that you don’t already know, I suggest youcontact a member to see if they can be of help. I personally have had excellent work done at my home by JimMeeks and Billy Howse and I know there are other members I may need sometime (except Karen…I don’tplan to go to jail)We would like to compile a list of the available skills of our members. If you would like other SDWT membersknow what you do and how they can contact you please send me (Sally Ault - sallyault@cox.net) yourcontact information and a brief description of the services or products you hvae to offer.Members who have retired often work as consultants or on a part time basis and have skills available for hire. They too are a valuable resource. We have a wonderful Mentor program for turning skills but we all do have other things in our life and a resourcelist will be of great help.JANUARY 2012 RAFFLE(Thanks Sally for the idea and write-up... - Phil)YES!ALL of the proceeds from the raffle are reinvested in future raffles and never usedfor any other purpose. Allenhas done an excellent job on your behalf and will mentor me through the process of taking his place.Needless to say it takes several people to handle this part of the operation for the club. If you have aninterest in participating with this part of the club’s operation please give me a call. I would like to havesomeone help me at the trailer before and after club meetings to help members pick out that special pieceof wood. This is a great time to meet and talk with other club members. I would also like to have a numberof people willing to cut and or load wood that becomes available in the county. Those with chain sawsand pickup trucks or trailers are encouraged to sign up. Sometimes there is advanced notice of wood to becut or picked up. Other times we will be like the “storm chasers” in that we will be given little notice ofa fallen tree, etc. Please call me if you have an interest in helping out. We want to keep a good selectionof wood for club members. Iwould like to develop a list ofa dozen or so knowing mostof the time we might onlyneed 3-6 persons for a particulareffort. Please call DanWhite: 619-403-0377 if youcan help.
