Bent Ave.Come join your friends and fellow artists for our open studio party. Nottingham provides a venue for artists andart groups to meet, work, collaborate and network. Our pot luck events are a fun way to get to know the Centerand your fellow artists. Our resident artists (glass artists, ceramists, woodworkers) are opening their studiosand will be on hand to talk about their work. There will be demonstrations and experienced glass blowers willhave the opportunity to blow glass as well. So come have some fun, hang out, meet new people and visit withold friends. You may bring whomever you wish, including children.* However, please leave pets at home.We will be holding a raffle! Prizes include instruction, Hot Glass Shop rental time, Paperweight Making Workshopand work made by Nottingham artists.This is a pot luck so please bring a main course dish and your favorite beverages. Barbeques will be availableshould you wish to grill something. San Diego Woodturners Page 9 May 2010From the Log to the Table - A Class With Don Owenby Sally AultDon Owens first class was great fun. We learnedabout chain saws and watched Don dissect one of thebig walnut burls and a number of other challengingpieces that class members brought. We learned aboutsafety, sharpening and maintenance of the chain sawsand about how to cut a piece of wood to achieve thebest end result.We then worked on making plates. Don showed ushow to cut a tenon that would be held with the chuckin expansion mode and then how to turn the front oncewe had finished the back. Don brought some wonderfulplates and platters that his family uses daily and weall decided that we need a set of wooden plates.We were the first class to be able to have everyone usingone of the club’s new Delta Midi-Lathes. They arereally excellent and will allow us to do more challengingpieces in classes.The class made some really nice plates…Don broughtsome figured maple for us and they really look great.Don’s second class will be held in May…unfortunatelyit is already full.We have a wealth of excellent resources in our cluband Don Owens is at the top of the list!
