<strong>San</strong> <strong>Diego</strong> <strong>Woodturners</strong> Page 4 <strong>May</strong> 2010The Wonderful World of Art andCraft ShowsAs a fulltime woodturner / artist Itravel to many cities to try and sellmy work.Sometimes indoor, air conditioned,and plenty of time to setup.Other times, outdoors, little setuptime and raining. This is the storyof one such show.It was March and I was off toArizona for a large, well knownArt Show. Show hours were 10amto dusk Fri – Sun. Check-in wasThursday with setup scheduled forafter 8pm Thursday night. TeardownSunday after 6PM but offthe street by midnight.I arrived early Thursday, foundcheck in and picked up all mypaperwork and instructions. Alsopaid $25 so I could park my van 8blocks from my booth everyday.Now the waiting game begins.The streets get closed off at 6pmand supposedly we can enter onthe only entrance starting at 8pm.In the meantime we start lining upon side streets around 2pm hopingthe cops won’t make us move. Thejockeying for position has alreadystarted. By 5pm the line of vansand trucks goes down 2 differentside streets with everybody watchingwarily for the moment they letus line up closer to the entrance.I am second in line on one suchstreet. The time ticks by.Suddenly I notice the guy inby Art Majerasfront of me leave his van and gofor a walk. When he gets back hestarts his van and drives over andparks at the entrance to the show.Number one in line. Time to getmoving. Engines start all aroundme, tires squeal, impatient artistsyell. I zoom around the corner andstart to pull into the curb behindthe first car. A woman jumps fromthe curb and says I have to backupas she is saving that space for herhusband who just went to get theirvan. I laugh as I keep movingforward and she finally jumps outof the way. No line jumping here.Once again I am second in lineand the guard has told us we canstay there until they let us in. It isnow 6pm. No more stress on lineso time to socialize.Stories of recent shows, whichhave been good and which havebeen bad, who got audited andchecks on families. The social lifeof an artist. Time ticks by again.8pm arrives but no move by theguard to let us in. Rumors ofwinds tonight have us rememberinglast year when we couldn’tsetup until 4am due to high winds.The weather holds though andfinally at 8:45pm the first of us arelet in.I navigate to the spot on thestreet where I am to setup andstart unloading. Streets are narrow.My van is tight to the curb withside mirrors pulled in.
