San Diego Woodturners Page 4 May 2010The Wonderful World of Art andCraft ShowsAs a fulltime woodturner / artist Itravel to many cities to try and sellmy work.Sometimes indoor, air conditioned, and plenty of time to setup.Other times, outdoors, little setuptime and raining. This is the storyof one such show.It was March and I was off toArizona for a large, well knownArt Show. Show hours were 10amto dusk Fri – Sun. Check-in wasThursday with setup scheduled forafter 8pm Thursday night. TeardownSunday after 6PM but offthe street by midnight.I arrived early Thursday, foundcheck in and picked up all mypaperwork and instructions. Alsopaid $25 so I could park my van 8blocks from my booth everyday. Now the waiting game begins. The streets get closed off at 6pmand supposedly we can enter onthe only entrance starting at 8pm.In the meantime we start lining upon side streets around 2pm hopingthe cops won’t make us move. Thejockeying for position has alreadystarted. By 5pm the line of vansand trucks goes down 2 differentside streets with everybody watchingwarily for the moment they letus line up closer to the entrance.I am second in line on one suchstreet. The time ticks by.Suddenly I notice the guy inby Art Majerasfront of me leave his van and gofor a walk. When he gets back hestarts his van and drives over andparks at the entrance to the show.Number one in line. Time to getmoving. Engines start all aroundme, tires squeal, impatient artistsyell. I zoom around the corner andstart to pull into the curb behindthe first car. A woman jumps fromthe curb and says I have to backupas she is saving that space for herhusband who just went to get theirvan. I laugh as I keep movingforward and she finally jumps outof the way. No line jumping here.Once again I am second in lineand the guard has told us we canstay there until they let us in. It isnow 6pm. No more stress on lineso time to socialize.Stories of recent shows, whichhave been good and which havebeen bad, who got audited andchecks on families. The social lifeof an artist. Time ticks by again.8pm arrives but no move by theguard to let us in. Rumors ofwinds tonight have us rememberinglast year when we couldn’tsetup until 4am due to high winds. The weather holds though andfinally at 8:45pm the first of us arelet in.I navigate to the spot on thestreet where I am to setup andstart unloading. San Diego Woodturners Page 5 May 2010Tribulations of A Wood AddictWhen I started turning wood Iwondered how I would ever findor afford all the wood I was sureI would need. Every time I hearda chain saw or saw a tree downI was there with my truck. Mysupply grew until more wood wasrotting than being turned. Thatdid not slow down my quest oraddiction for wood. I would bringback wood in my luggage fromevery trip ,last trip I brought backKauri and other woods from NewZealand. So then I heard aboutthis resource person needed forour club. A perfect fit for my addiction. Now I could join forceswith other addicts. After severalmonths on the job I think I havefound the cure for my addiction. Ihave now seen, handled and storedmore wood than the club or I willuse in a long time.I found that there are hazards tocollecting for the club. One beingasking Ken Haines what kind ofwood I found and getting a lessonin the botanical name, the species, sub species, its origin and woodturningproperties, and toxicity. And then still not knowing whatI found. Another hazard is goingwith Tom Edwards to get wood. That maniac with a chain saw cansaw more wood faster than fourmen can put it on the truck.Anotherhazard is asking my little truckto haul what is intended to fit in anOregon logging truck. The satisfying part is that the trailerat Nottingham contains a nicesupply of excellent turning wood.Wood now available include:by Allen DriverAsh, Pine, Carob, Citrus, Persimmon,Eucalptus, Bunya Buanya,Jacaranda, Deodar Cedar, Willow, and Pecan. Wood is available onehour prior to club meetings at 25cents per pound. The money goesto the club and is drawn on to payfor supplies used in gathering andstoring. Some wood is in largepieces but club members withchain saws will help cut it into usablesize. This wood is available thanksto club members that have volunteeredtime and equipment toharvest the wood. Tom Edwardshad gathered much of the woodand stored it in Chula Vista beforeit was moved to Nottingham.Other members that have helpedare Ross Mandryk, Walt Parry,Ray Saez, Jan Greenwald, BrianMagone, Marshall Chapman, LynnShoger, Al Buffington, KarenFreitas, Ray Camien, Ray Brooks,Dell Pound.and Ken Haines. I amsure I have left someone off thelist. We have had fun and productivedays gathering wood. If you feelleft out of the fun and want to contributecontact Allen Driver, KenHaines,or Tom Edwards. In additionto the fun you will be able toscore a few select pieces for yourprivate collection.I wonder if I will find wood inUtah that I do not have in my collectionor if I will have room inmy suitcase for a maple burl I findIn Virginia, well so much for thecure.PresidentBoard MembersNan Bushley (760) 728-0591Vice PresidentSally Ault (619) 225-1120SecretaryKen Haines (760) 432-0563TreasurerKen Roth (858) 842-1236Members at LargeArt Bolic (858) 292-7127Al Buffington (858) 487-3631Sam Dixon (760) 743-8566Allen Driver (760) 518-0507Tom Edwards (619) 423-2778Karen Freitas (760) 727-3950Jim Meeks (858) 485-6544Rick Rausch (858) 748-3645Lynn Shoger (760) 967-1815Tom Stahl (858) 748-0068Phil Stivers (760) 480-9477Scott Van Hoften (858) 453-8504

San Diego Woodturners Page 9 May 2010From the Log to the Table - A Class With Don Owenby Sally AultDon Owens first class was great fun. We learnedabout chain saws and watched Don dissect one of thebig walnut burls and a number of other challengingpieces that class members brought. We learned aboutsafety, sharpening and maintenance of the chain sawsand about how to cut a piece of wood to achieve thebest end result. We then worked on making plates. Don showed ushow to cut a tenon that would be held with the chuckin expansion mode and then how to turn the front oncewe had finished the back. Don brought some wonderfulplates and platters that his family uses daily and weall decided that we need a set of wooden plates. We were the first class to be able to have everyone usingone of the club’s new Delta Midi-Lathes. They arereally excellent and will allow us to do more challengingpieces in classes. The class made some really nice plates…Don broughtsome figured maple for us and they really look great.Don’s second class will be held in May…unfortunatelyit is already full.We have a wealth of excellent resources in our cluband Don Owens is at the top of the list! Thanks Don.

San Diego Woodturners Page 12 May 2010MENTOR PROGRAMMENTOR; an experienced and trusted advisor( Oxford/American dictionary)This has been a very busy year so far, with all of the great programs, and the classes, before and after the monthly meetings. The Turn Around was another very successful event from all ofthe feedback I’ve been getting. The club is growing and Nanhas been introducing multiple new members at every meeting. This is where my idea of mentorship comes in.Even though we have a formal list of mentors all across thecounty, that assist us all at whatever skill level we’re at, there’sstill a need for a less formal approach. Remember when youfirst joined the club, how new everything was, and all the questionsyou had but didn’t want to “BUG” anyone? The spirit ofmentorship should be in us all. I believe we have a very friendlyatmosphere at our meetings, and each of us can contributeto that with a simple hand shake and a friendly greeting. If wemake sure our newer members needs are met, I can guarantee asteady and healthy growth in our club. I’ve never seen it fail.As always, I am open to suggestions.Rick Rausch 858-243-3647pitdog@cox.net

Ken and Pat Roth graciously open their home and theirinteresting and spacious back yard to us and the fun begins. (We appreciate their hospitality.)The Raffle at this event is not about lathes or tools. It is dedicated to our club charities. (Toys For Tots, Turn-A-Round For Vets, etc.) Nan has been the heart and soul of this this raffle theme for as long as I’ve been in the cluband we appreciate her tireless efforts, but she can’t do it without our help. That’s where we come in.Each year members of the club donate a piece of their own turnings to the raffle. In turn, we raffle these wonderfulworks of art off and add the proceeds of the raffle to our annual charity fund. Among the donated itemsare various items donated by some of the world class turners that have demonstrated at the club meetings andanyone else that Nan can talk into making a contribution (who can refuse Nan?)Join us in this worthy cause. Donate an item if you can, and buy some tickets for a chance to win one of thesetreasures.See you at the picnic!Rick RauschMAY 2010 CLUB RAFFLETicket prices at this event are as follows;1= $5.00 6=$25.00 13= $50.00 22= $75.00 30= $100.00
