Suggestions from young people for improving <strong>access</strong> <strong>and</strong> serviceprovision! InformationYoung people made a wide range <strong>of</strong> suggestions about information - <strong>the</strong> type <strong>of</strong> information<strong>the</strong>y want, <strong>the</strong> routes through which this should be shared <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> level/presentation <strong>of</strong>information.Types <strong>of</strong> informationYoung people wanted specific information on <strong>the</strong> following:• What mental health is <strong>and</strong> how mental health problems may affect you.• What CAMHS/mental health services do - who works in <strong>the</strong>m, what treatment <strong>the</strong>y <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>and</strong> how to <strong>access</strong> <strong>the</strong>m.• Information on drug <strong>and</strong> alcohol problems.• Information about how you can help yourself including strategies for managing anxiety<strong>and</strong> depression, exercise <strong>and</strong> relaxation techniques.• Information about how past experiences can affect how you feel in <strong>the</strong> present <strong>and</strong>information about how stress can affect you.• Information about how different services - for example, health <strong>and</strong> social services, worktoge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> how <strong>and</strong> what information is shared between <strong>the</strong>m.• Information about services in your local area including voluntary sector projects <strong>and</strong>drop-in resources.Routes for information sharingSchools, colleges <strong>and</strong> local youth <strong>and</strong> sports clubs were seen as good places to disseminateinformation about mental health services to large numbers <strong>of</strong> young people through workshopsor drop-in sessions. Sharing information through <strong>the</strong>se routes was also seen to be nonstigmatising:“It would be good if someone came in at Year 10 or 11 to explain various situations that youngpeople can find <strong>the</strong>mselves in <strong>and</strong> how <strong>and</strong> where to get help.” (Interviewee with experience <strong>of</strong>CAMHS)The importance <strong>of</strong> young people being involved in this sharing <strong>of</strong> information, <strong>and</strong> taking <strong>into</strong>account <strong>the</strong>ir points <strong>of</strong> view, was also highlighted:“Young people’s points <strong>of</strong> view are important <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y can communicate with o<strong>the</strong>r youngpeople <strong>and</strong> that can make more <strong>of</strong> a difference than older people talking to you…” (Intervieweewith experience <strong>of</strong> CAMHS)Various non-traditional routes for sharing information were also suggested by <strong>the</strong> youngrespondents, including <strong>the</strong> media (radio <strong>and</strong> television); through churches <strong>and</strong> local faithgroups; o<strong>the</strong>r venues used by young people for socialising <strong>and</strong> via email, internet <strong>and</strong> textmessaging. The use <strong>of</strong> video for education about mental health was also recommended.How to present informationThe following points were noted:• Information should be shared both verbally <strong>and</strong> through distribution <strong>of</strong> writtenmaterials.• Information leaflets/booklets should be short <strong>and</strong> in simple, jargon-free language.Pictures or illustrations are important in making <strong>the</strong> material look interesting.• Videos <strong>and</strong> CD-ROMs were also suggested as useful ways <strong>of</strong> sharing information.• Information should be in different languages, especially for parents.<strong>Minority</strong> Voices <strong>Research</strong> Report30
