President's Messagecontinued from page 1In my personal education as astate president, I have had the opportunityto compare notes with otherstate presidents at various meetingsand conferences. Knowing the financialstress that publishing The FloridaMusic Teacher was causing FSMTA, Icame to such meetings eager to findout how other state were faring withtheir newsletters. I must say thatboth I and the other presidents wereastounded when we did comparenotes: they were floored to find outhow many issues we produced, and Iwas equally floored to discover thatmost other states—at least withinour Southern Division—only producetwo newsletters a year. It wasthen that I realized the ten issues peryear that we had been accustomed toin Florida represented an anomaly, doubtless a vestige from the days ofour “piggybacking” on to The FloridaMusic Director. From all reports, last year’s experimentwith decreasing the number ofissues from ten to eight proved to besuccessful. The effectiveness of communicationwithin FSMTA seemedto flow unimpeded. The only majordisruption resulted not from a decreasein number of issues, but froma failure in the postal system to mailsome of our April/May newslettersto Districts VII and VIII (old numbersVII and X). Most importantly, the costs of the newsletter decreasedfrom $12,850 to about $8500.Moving to five issues a year shouldprove to be a good compromise. Fiveissues will still be more than twicethe number most states produce, andwe will not be moving to the onlineonlyoption. Although the total numberof issues will have decreased, our hope is that we will continue todevelop our web site so that supplementalinformation and updates canbe found online. Most importantly, the estimated costs of The FloridaMusic Teacher for 2005-2006 will approximate$4300. That means at least$8000 more can be used every yearto reach other goals and develop newprograms without compromising thegoal of efficient communication. (Bythe way, some of the decrease in estimatedcosts is due to more efficientproduction—for the mathematiciansin our midst.)Could we have continued toproduce ten issues The Florida MusicTeacher each year? Perhaps we couldhave for a while, but not without ultimatelytapping into our reserves. The greatest cost, though, would notbe in dollars—it would be in the lossof other aspects of our mission wecould not realize as effectively. As we prepare for another AnnualConference, this is a good timeto remind you that Executive Boardmeetings are always open to the generalmembership. As you read aboutthe exciting schedule the 2005 ConferenceCommittee has planned, take note of when the Board will bemeeting. Please know that you arewelcome to join us as we continue toattempt to serve you and better fulfillthe mission of FSMTA.C e r t i f i c at i o n N e w sby Cynthia H.
