MAIL AND MESSAGES:Mailboxes in the <strong>Resident</strong> Lounge at Mercy Medical Center, the Family Practice Centers, emailand should be checked frequently, and action taken expeditiously when needed. <strong>Resident</strong>s areprovided with pagers accessed via Mercy Medical Center Switchboard. Notify the MMCoperator if your pager seems to be malfunctioning. Please attempt to keep your pager fromdropping into puddles, toilets, or rivers and please safeguard it from loss or theft.MALPRACTICE:The program provides ongoing malpractice insurance to all residents. If you encounter anysituation that you think might involve legal action, notify the Program Director at once. Thisincludes receiving legal documents asking for patient records; a bad clinical outcome, whichcould in any way be construed to involve negligence or other malpractice; or threats of suit froman angry patient or family member. The hospital also provides a “Tail” coverage, which meansyou are covered for events while a resident after you leave. If after graduation you are evernamed in a law suite involving a patient at Mercy, contact the Residency Program immediatelyso that we may involve our Risk Management and assist you as appropriate. The medicalstaff rules regarding timely completion of charts apply to residents, even though they are notofficial members of the medical staff and do not have admitting privileges; they work under theprivileges of the attending preceptor. <strong>Resident</strong>s placed on “suspension” for incomplete medicalrecords must remedy this within 24 hours. If records are not completed, the resident will bepulled from their rotation. If the suspended resident is on an in-patient service, another residenton an elective or other available rotation will be pulled to cover. This resident will be paid back.If the “suspended” resident is scheduled for call, the Jeopardy resident will replace them. Thisresident will be paid back. A copy of medical records suspension will be added to the residentfile for reference.
