Alternative Scholarly Activities:1. Research. As an alternative to presenting to the hospital medical staff, a senior residentwith prior approval from the program director may participate in an active researchprogram which gives the resident an awareness of the basic principles of study design,performance, analysis, and reporting, as well as of the relevance of research to patientcare.2. Presentation at a national, regional, state, or local meeting. This must involve amedical audience of larger scope than just the residents and faculty members. Suchpresentations must be approved ahead of time by the program director and attended bythe academic advisor or his/her designee. Presentations must include a thorough andcritical review of the medical literature concerning the topic, with at least 10 referencessited in the bibliography.RESEARCHResearch is essential to advancing primary care. <strong>Resident</strong>s are encouraged to develop researchprojects and may use elective or CME time for this purpose as approved by the ProgramDirector. Assistance can be obtained from core faculty. Financial support can be arranged insome cases. Papers can be submitted to appropriate journals.A. Service Goals:RURAL FAMILY MEDICINEEach resident will experience rural family medicine in order to understand the uniquechallenges of such practice (clinical and operational) and to be able to better decide if arural practice fits their career interests. (See also Residency Goals and Competencies)B. Service Description:Second year residents have the opportunity to request the locations for this two weekrotation including: 1) Siskiyou Medical Group (Mt. Shasta), 2) Lassen Medical Group(Red Bluff) 3) Tehama County <strong>Health</strong> Services (Red Bluff), 4) Intermountain FamilyPractice (Fall River), and 5) Hill Country Community Clinic (Round Mountain). Tobroaden experiences and exposure to various practice sites, two separate locations may beselected during this rotation. <strong>Resident</strong>s have the option of living in the mountaincommunities during the rotation or being reimbursed for daily commute miles. <strong>Resident</strong>swill be scheduled in their family health center for continuity patients on Fridays andMondays all day twice during the rotation, and will participate in some hospital call atMMCR.Page 75 of 153C:\Documents and Settings\dhutak\Desktop\rshb13.doc
