Service Goals:Musculoskeletal injuries comprise a common part of family medicine, and familyphysicians provide a huge amount of school and team medicine in the communities weserve. Degenerative arthritis is becoming a constantly growing problem as ourpopulation ages and as our youth’s obesity epidemic grows. This rotation is intended toprepare the resident to appropriately manage such problems. (See also Residency Goalsand Competencies)B. Service Description:<strong>Resident</strong>s are assigned to various orthopedic physicians, sports medicine fellowship trainedphysicians (both family medicine and orthopedic), physical therapists, physiatrists, and trainersin this rotation. <strong>Resident</strong>s will attend at least one major athletic event and will assist in preparticipationevaluations which, given the nature of the sports seasons, may not happen duringthis actual rotation. The rotation is one month long in the second year and one month long in thethird year In addition orthopedics specialty clinics occur while on the Clinic 1 rotation up totwo times per month. The sports medicine component of this rotation involves the following: 1)Working the with sports medicine fellowship trained family physician, Dr. Tony Chang, in hisoffice, at athletic events and post game clinics and 2) Participating in pre-participation physicalexams at local schools. In addition, residents work with Dr. Schillen, who is a sports medicinefellowship trained orthopedic surgeon who combines sports medicine and general orthopedics inhis practice.Didactic training will include the following lecture topics covered during the course of residencytraining:1) Shoulder anatomy and exam2) spine anatomy and exam3) Knee anatomy and exam4) Hip anatomy and exam5) Ankle/foot anatomy and exam6) Elbow/wrist anatomy and exam7) Hand anatomy and exam8) Fracture care/splinting/casting9) Sports nutrition/supplementsPage 66 of 153C:\Documents and Settings\dhutak\Desktop\rshb13.doc
