If all vacation time has already been used, then the residency training and theresident’s graduation date will be extended.SUPERVISION:Supervision of residents is essential to quality graduate medical education and to the safe care ofthe patients we serve. Residency is an educational experience that, more than anything elsedevelops judgment and skills and these qualities can only come from responsibility withfeedback. Supervision not only involves an assessment of the resident’s clinical knowledge andskills, but also interpersonal (professional and patient) skills essential to being an effectivedoctor.Supervision (and evaluation) is a requirement of the ACGME, which certifies all graduatemedical education programs, and is now re-focusing on competency-based curriculum, whichthis program has embraced. Each rotation has the defined competencies, which familyphysicians (and at times family practice residents in this hospital) require to be effective andsuccessful.Supervision also has regulatory components affecting the supervising physician and his/herobligations as described in Mercy Medical Center Redding’s Policy below. All issues ofsupervision policy are determined at Mercy’s Graduate Medical Education Committee, whichconsists of attending physicians, faculty, chief resident and administrative representatives(including the Vice President of Medical Affairs).Page 116 of 153POLICY STATEMENT ON GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION PROGRAMMERCY MEDICAL CENTER REDDINGSUPERVISION OF A RESIDENT1.
